21 y old Malt help?

Hi, just looking for some advice for a newbie here....my nephew is 21 shortly and i am looking to buy a 21 y old malt for him.....not to drink but for an investment...any advice?

what's your budget?

Generally, if you want something of this age from one of the big players in the investment market then you'll need some hefty outlay upfront and a long time to sit on it for it to appreciate.

Yes i have noticed some of the prices.....what about any bottle for around £50- £100?

Probably not, that's just normal prices for these whiskies, infact you may struggle to even get a 21yo for that range, most will be 18yrs.

If you can find £200+ then this is a winner. Certain places it's already going for twice that amount.

Springbank don't do 21yr olds.....think this is the first (or maybe 2nd) one ever and their oldest release to-date.

Guarenteed to go up in value well - it's also a good dram (had a sample) if he does decide to drink it.

There are lots of good 21 year olds for drinking between £50 and £100: you can always count on Glenfarclas for example, and the Glendronach Parliament and Old Pulteney 21 year olds are superb as well. But if you're looking for a profit down the road, it's both harder to predict and a bigger budget is needed in order to go for things like limited editions, 'cult' distilleries and so on.

not easy to find. I've got a case hidden away when they were still about. Rosebank is closed, gone, shut, dead, so there will never be any more. In 7 or 8 any aging stock will be gone and then that's it......It goes the way of Port Ellen. In the long run there will be very very large price rises. It's a beautiful and rare dram and a lovely bottle to have.

I had looked at the Glenfarclas 21....may just go for it

It's an above average dram, but there are better in my opinion. Also, it's a drinking dram and not a keeping/investing dram.

I am a fan of the Glenfarclas 21, but as opelfruit says it's not an investing dram. In 20 years' time it may be worth a few pounds more than a new bottle (since the label design will have probably changed by then etc.) but that's about it.

The Tomintoul 21 is a favorite of mine and goes for 67 British pounds across the pond. It's a lovely drop regardless of the reason for getting it. It's $179.00 Canadian dollars here. The price has crept up a bit here so it may be an indication of some increasing value. Who knows....


P.S. In 2009 Tomintoul entered the Guinness Book of World Records by producing the largest bottle of whisky in the world, containing 105.3 litres of 14 year old Tomintoul malt whisky.
