GlenDronach announced today the launch of a new addition to their popular wood finish range the new GlenDronach 18 year old Tawny Port Finish which replaces the 15 year old Tawny Port finish expression.
First matured in European oak casks and thereafter finishes its maturation in a small batch of Tawny Port casks. It was bottled at 46% ABV.

It makes sense - 18 years old would date the distillation back to 1996, the year Glendronach was mothballed. So why stick with a '15 year-old' that's in fact older when they can sell it as an 18 year-old and presumably charge more?
(I'm not being cynical, just taking a reasonable guess at the reason behind this) |

Perhaps they didnt want to swamp the market with too many older more expensive expressions and wanted to make their range affordable so they could establish a customer base. |

I'm glad that GlenDronach is introducing new port finish expression as I was not overly impressed with their existing younger (14-15 YO) wood finish range - IMO they are good but not excellent.
Recently (I don't remember where) Alistair Walker mentioned that they will "optimize"? their Wood Finish range and I was not expecting new expression anytime soon. It's great that they are offering something older and I hope that their initial experimentation phase with different wood is over. |
