I'm new to collecting so forgive my ignorance but can anyone tell me if who the malt was bottled by has any overall effect on the value. For example buying a Port Ellen bottle as an investment and want to make the most informed decision on which to buy

Absolutely it does.

Official distillery released bottlings (certainly of PE etc) will carry much higher returns than something release by an IB - a lot more.

Original distillery bottlings will always be more desirable but certain distilleries will still do very well whether it is an indie or original bottling Port Ellen being one of those, it will not fetch as much as an OB bottling but as availability gets less in years to come it should do well as an investment as long as you are able to pick it up for a good price now.

Of PE? Good luck with that Smile

Anything that will have any investment room in it will have gone. They go immediately on release. If you want them for collection only and not investment then I hope you have deep (and I mean mega deep) pockets.

Yea Port Ellen is something else, expensive though

If i could afford this I would get it in a heartbeat.

Just put the house up for sale.. Rolling Eyes
There are a few other closed distilleries out there whose Whisky is now starting to command some good prices, in my opinion port Ellen is now a toy for the rich, rosebank is the new port Ellen .. Give it a few years and it will be silly money too

Indeed, I've got a case of 21yo special release Rosebank sitting hidden for just that time, a bargin at £110 a bottle too. Rosebanks not that great older than this, so a few years time when they've dumped their casks and bottled most of it I should be laughing. Unless I accidentally drink it all, which is entirely possible Top Malt

If you are buying as an investment then i would say a good guide is to check out how Old & Rare bottlings of Port Ellen have done at auction lately to show you how this may fare as an investment. I believe Port Ellen Old & Rare bottlings from Douglas Laing and the brand now comes under Hunter Laing have been selling at auction lately for around £400 - £500 you would have around 20% costs to pay on this. scotchwhiskyauctions.com should be a good reference for prices.
