Laphroaig have revealed a new addition to their portfolio, the Laphroaig Select.

Laphroaig Master Distiller John Campbell has selected the spirit from Laphroaig Quarter Cask, PX Cask, Triple Wood (European Oak casks) and a final addition of 10 Year Old to create Laphroaig Select.

Bottled at 40% ABV and natural colour, with no age statement Laphroaig tell me that the new single malt offers Laphroaig's trademark "peat reek' matched by an additional layer of complexity and depth brought about by the fusion of the maturation styles and different oaks.

More info and a video of Laphroaig Distillery manager tasting the new expression here:

Always good to have a new Laphroaig, pity they have went for the bottling strength of 40% but thats a business decision i would guess, have you tried it William.

No Fergie, I had heard it was coming but just got the details from Laphroaig today. I would guess that it will be a bit milder peat wise that the QC and 10, the official tasting note doesnt sound like it has a big PX cask influence at all.

Just a thought, is this why Laphroaig Quarter Cask has been disappeearing from supermarket shelves, Laphroaig stock has been going into the new more profitable 40% Laphroaig Select. I hope its a good one.

I got the FOL email announcing this, as said above another Laphroaig is always welcome, hopefully the combintaion of casks havent toned down the Laphroaig peat too much.

Are they trying to substitute complexity which comes with age with the intense spice, sweetness and vanilla which can come from the final maturation in new American Oak casks. Whatever i am sure it will be a hit if the Laphroaig peat hasnt been diluted down too much. I will certainly give it a go in this price bracket but it will have to be good for repeat buys as the alternative Quarter Cask with the 48% ABV is hard to beat unless they dare raising the price on that as I think they would price it out of my interest as i know it is young whisky.

There is always room for another Laphroaig.

It does look like age statements are going out of fashion though, all about profit i suppose.

Serge on whiskyfun has already reviewed it, he's not a fan (70/100).

I cant imagine any Laphroaig meriting a score as low as 70/100. It does seem like whishfun have rated low because it wasnt what they want from Laphroaig were to me it looks like Laphroaig has done some thing different which has resulted in a much milder peaty character than people expect from Laphroaig but i doubt that this would make this a whisky deserving of a 70/100 quality rating. I think the whiskyfun rating may be more a rating based on disappointment of what they expect rather than a rating of the quality of the actual new Laphroaig Select whisky.

Perhaps it will be another Ardbeg Blasda, a quality whisky but too far off the distillerys style for fans of the whisky to like it.

70 out of 100 is a very low mark, everyones rating scale isnt the same but that mark would suggest the whisky is flawed. I hope not. I will still give it a go.

Too much sweet oak and not enough 'Laphroaig' is Serge's verdict - I guess he does consider it flawed in the sense that it seems to be completely wood-driven (Oloroso, new oak, Bourbon casks, PX hogsheads, and Quarter Casks all in the mix apparently). But yes, a great deal of the negativity is based around the fact that it's not what he expects from Laphroaig.

To give the 70/100 some perspective whiskyfun score the Laphroaig 10 batch 5 cask strength at 85/100 which i think is a low mark and i am sure other Laphroaig fans will think so also.
