Another delightful dinner and single malt scotch tasting last night. The interesting twist was that none of the three scotches I was told would be served were there. Instead the single malts that were poured were:

Glencadam 15 YO, OB,46% abv

Tomintoul 16 YO 40%abv, 1st fill sherry cask.

Tomintoul 9 YO 40% abv, peated.

I have had other expressions of these 2 distilleries but had never tried these specific expressions before.

The winner for me was the Tomintoul 16 with the sensory stimulation from the dark fruit and aged marmelade deep aromas and flavors. The Glencadam 15 was a neat mix of sweet and spice enhanced by the 46% abv. The young peaty Tomintoul had a nice edge to it and a raw appeal. My complete taste notes are now in the Tasting Notes section of the Forum.
Very Happy

I just read your tasting notes, sounds like it was another good night Murray albeit not quite what you were expecting. I have had the Glencadam 15, a decent Highland malt, with sweet malt and spice.

Hi Murray,

Enjoyed your tasting notes, I was taken by the 'Pineapple Surprise' nose of the Tomintoul 16. Love it when whiskies do that where out of seemly nowhere something really joyful and pleasant arrives.

From your notes I'd go for the Tomintoul 16 as it seems right up my street.

Rob, yes, the Tomintoul 16 is a fine dram. The first fill sherry casks really bring this one to life.

Yes William, it was a great evening with good chat, food and whisky. Actually , I have now tried a trio of Glencadams including the 10 YO, the 12 YO Port Finish and now the 15 YO.

I have tried the Glencadam 15 which is pretty good. The 2 Tomintouls sound interesting.

Another good evening Murray. Sounds enjoyable. I've tried the Glencadam and rather enjoyed it, in fact all the Glencadams I've tried have been nice.
