I have been considering a blend that offers everything I love from Islay, and will offer me the flavor of other distilleries from the region as well. So easy question what do you my fellow whisky lovers prefer. _________________ The Laga 16.

| Both are excellent but if i was to choose one i would go for Big Peat, the peat level can vary slightly from batch to batch but always a decent peaty whisky. |

I enjoy The Peat Monster myself but both are right up any peat aficionado's alley.

| I have no personal preference between the 2 of these, simply different whiskies, i wouldnt say one is better than the other, both are great drams. I have found that they can both vary from batch to batch in terms of peatiness. |

I love the more maritime drams of Islay, and the hard hitting peat goliaths. _________________ The Laga 16.

These aren't Blended Scotch, they are Blended Malt Scotch - no grain the mixed, 100% malted barley from various distilleries.
The Peat Monster isn't 100% Islay, it has some Ardmore in the mix (which is a peated Speysider). Most of the Islay in the mix is from around Askaig (so Caol Ila probably), with some south shore stuff too. Age range is 10-16 years old for the vatting and it's non-chill filtered, natural colour. It's nice.
Big Peat is all Islay all the way. Caol Illa, Bowmore, Ardbeg and Port Ellen (teeny weeny bit) if I remember correctly.
.....for me it's Big Peat, it's got younger stuff in the mix, but I think this works well with the Islays and a real winner. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

My preference would also be for the young peaty Islay whiskies in Big Peat but both are worth trying, why choose between them Neither will bust the bank. |

True for around 110 USD I could get both. _________________ The Laga 16.

| It's Big Peat for me, but not by much. I like the Peat Monster too but didn't find it particularly, well, monstrous! I wouldn't say it's flawed in any way compared to Big Peat, just what I prefer. |

As Bookie points out both are worth trying but if your have a preference for southern Islay peat smoke then you will find more of this in Big Peat. Look out the the excellent Big Peat Christmas cask strength editions. |

Limited releases of whisky are hard to find in California. _________________ The Laga 16.
