Hi all,

Got into a discussion with some friends yesterday and was after your well informed thoughts. Basically what would you be willing to pay for the following bottles. Not what it's actually worth but what you would actually think is a fair price.

Bowmore 50 year old
Glenfiddich 30 year old
Bowmore Devil's Cask

We had a discussion that covered lots of bottles but these had the biggest disparity in percentage terms in our group. I said -

Bowmore 50 yo - £3000
Glenfiddich 30 yo - £150
Bowmore Devil's Cask - £80

We all (my self included) complain about prices but just thought it was interesting what peoples worth of the above was?

Regards

Rob

The prices of whiskies these days are increasing so fast my what i think its worth or would be willing to pay for it price constantly falls way behind the asking price in todays market.

Any 50 year old original distillery bottling these days i would expect to have a starting price of £3000. Older Bowmore bottlings are quite sought after so if I had that kind of money to splash out on a single bottle i would pay up to £4500 which is way short of the £16000 i believe they are asking for it.

Having had a bottle of the Glenfiddich 30 which i paid around £240 about 3 years ago i would say it was a superb whisky and i would pay the same again but not much more due to the fact that i have had a bottle and there are many others in this price range which i havent had.

I had a bottle of the Bowmore Devil's Cask and have another in the cupboard, it is a superb whisky and its release price was spot on for what it was. Due to it being a limited release i realise that i would have to pay more for it and if i was buying another bottle it would be to drink so i wouldnt spend more than £100. As an long term investment i may pay more but whisky investment isnt really my thing as i keep opening them Very Happy

For some of the really rarer malts, I would rather pay for one dram and at least have the experience of trying it. I've done this for rarer Port Ellens for example, which can be many thousands of dollars a bottle. Not cheap by any means, a rarer dram can be the price of a full bottle of a fine malt but under these circumstances more affordable. A friend of mine had a dram of the Glenfiddich 50 year old in Las Vegas which was going for $500.00 dollars a dram and he got it I believe for $300. The bottle was going here for $26,000 here in Ontario.

Glenfiddich which is one of the more reasonable priced whiskeys, has to be near £200 and more, without looking at prices. This week I saw a bottle of Glenfiddich 18 year old, for about £86 including delivery, very good value ?.

Bowmore Devil cask, highly sort after, over £100. I would like to try and get a bottle, but the prices are crazy, I remember on a whisky auction one bottle sold for £320, mad.

This is hard to answer as i know the value of the 3 whiskies.

For the Bowmore 50 if i had the money i would pay £4000 - £5000 max

The Glenfiddich 30 is superb, a core range bottle with little or no collectable value so i wish i could pay £200 for it but i know i now have to fork out closer to £300 for it in todays whisky marketplace.

Being a limited edition that has sold out, for drinking i would pay no more than £100 for the Bowmore Devil's Cask. I know there are some Bowmore collectors out there that would happily pay a lot more for this as it was so highly rated.

I don't want to open any tired debates, so for the purpose of this I'm going to assume you're talking about buying to drink rather than as a short/medium/ long term investment.

I'm also going to assume you're talking about in our current financial positions, rather than unlimited money.

So the Bowmore I'd pay probably no more than £300. Financially stricken I couldn't justify any more than that on a consumable, plys with 2 kids in the house there are way more important things to spend my hard earned on.

The fiddich probably £100 I've tried it, it was nice, but nothing that blew me away I'd say that was a fair price for the liquid in the bottle.

The Devils cask, want it something like £80 at release? I'd not pay more than the release price for it, even then I doubt I'd actually pay that. A 10yo cask strength Bowmore, £50 tops
