Glendronach Distillery which was established in 1826 and is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries is set to be bought by a South African consortium in a £15 million deal.
The South African consortium, which already owns the BenRiach distillery on Speyside, is reported to be close to signing a deal for neighbouring Glendronach distillery.
The consortium is being led by former operations director for Burn Stewart Distillers, whisky veteran Billy Walker. They want to purchase the distillery from its current owner Pernod Ricard who aquired the distillery in 2005. It is understood that the distillery is surplus to Pernod Ricard's requirements following the expansion of its Glenlivet distillery and the reopening of its other facilities at Allt a'Bhainne.
A spokesman for Pernod Ricard was quoted as saying: "The sale of Glendronach is making good progress and we expect to complete the sale by September."

Just thought i would update this post. I noticed that the BBC News website is reporting that Pernod Ricard/Chivas Brothers have annouced the sale of Glendronach to The BenRiach Distillery Company.
Chivas Brothers said it was selling Glendronach so it could concentrate on developing and improving its remaining 13 malt distilleries including the recently re-opened Braeval distillery.
It said the new owners, The Benriach Distillery Company, would be able to "give it the attention it deserved".
Anyway good luck to the new owners and i hope they are as successful at Glendronach as they have been at BenRiach.

Hi John,
I spoke to Alan MacConnochie, distillery manager at BenRiach who confirmed the above report. He has been over at Glendronach for more than a week now putting everything in place.
I'm happy about the sale too as it reduces the number of distilleries in hand of the 'big' 2 (Diageo & Pernot Ricard)
