Whisky Forum - Noobish question: 1984 30-year old?

Hallo all - great forum here. I have a somewhat noobish question about the production of new old single malts ... if you see what I mean.

I.e. when can I expect to see releases of 30 year old single malts from 1984? Hoping to get one as a present, but at present there's nothing around. Seems our current options are either a non-specific 30 year old (secret distillery) or 28 and 29 year olds from '84.

Your knowledge and words of advice would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum.

You will find there will be new releases throughout the year. For a bottle with a vintage/year and age statement you will probably have more luck finding one from an independent bottler. Your best bet would be the likes of Douglas Laing, Signatory, Gordon & Macphail, Duncan Taylor and Ian Macleod. You could try contacting them via their web sites, they are usually very helpful.

You could also check The Whisky Exchange online shop, they have a handy search near the bottom of their home page where you can search by year or age and they are adding bottles all the time and they usually have the biggest selection you will find anywhere.

The later you are in the year the more that will be released.

Independent bottlers are the way forward on this one I feel, most of the OB bottles will just be a generic age of 30 which could have been bottleled a couple of years back.

To get an 1984 - 2014 specfic 30yo then you'll get a much better chance with the indi bottlers. I assume given your question that this is for a gift? There migh be a very slim chance that you could find a single cask that has been filled into the cask on said persons birthday, though this is a massive long shot, as not all single casks have the specific date on them, though many do.

Not ideal, but if you are short of choice and time, you could consider getting a whisky distilled in 1984. It won't be 30 years old, but you'd have more choice (and I dare say at a push, the right date).

Another thought I had. Depending if money is a problem or not. But you could look at grain whisky as an option

Whiskybroker has a Tormore distilled on the 24 the Feb 1984. It was bottled as a 28 and a 29. Get in contact as he might have some held back for a 30.

Or give Cadenheads a phone and see what they have.

It's a bit early in the year to have a 1984 bottled at 30 years old.

I have had the same problem with someone who was selfish enought to get married during February 21 years ago. What I did as found out when the couple actually got together - which turned out to be 1988 so I got them a 21 year old to represent the length of time they'd been married but from 1988 to represent the year they got together as opposed to 1993 when they got married.

There was no chance of getting a 21 year old 1993 in Feb 2014 and I think you'll have the same problem getting a 30 year old 1984 in Feb / March 2014.

I know one of the blokes who works at Duncan Taylor and will see if he knows of anything on the horizon but I wouldn't bank on it.
