The wee man was up at some ungodly hour last night, 04:38 since you ask. And after I had setteled him my mind was racing with the usual nonsense.
Part of that usual nonsense was whisky.
I was thinking about how much I drink, the frequencey etc, which I thought may make a good thread for the forum. Or it could bomb like most of the threads I think will be a good idea. Either way, it's exciting.
So, I tend to drink whisky mainly on a Thursday - Sunday (though not always). Giving me a steady 3 days off per week.
I also tend not to have that much, between 1 and 3 pours most of those days, sometimes more but only really if I have a vsitor, or something is going down particularly well.
My self pours, I don't think are actually on the large side, which I would imagine is what everyone says, I tend to use a Glencairns glass and pour to about half way up to the widest part. That said, a lot of what I drink is cask strength so there is probably quite a lot of alcohol in there still.
Overall, given that a don't really drink any other alcohol, I don't think my consumption is excessive, or anything to be overly concerend about (*hic!). My doctor may very well agree.
So how do the fine people of the forum stack up? |

I would like to think that I am well within the RDA of alcohol and only drink Fri/Sat/Sun, Ralfy.com Review No 403 (11m 20s) has a clever idea to check how much you are drinking, I will be giving it a go next week, but I have found that over the years I am now tasting whisky as apposed to drinking it and therefore I am having less but better quality and better nights sleep.

I very much like you differentiating the concept of "tasting" from "drinking" scotch whisky which works on a number of levels. When I go to an exclusive single malt pub in Toronto and order a Port Ellen 22 Year old for $50.00 an ounce, I don't say 'I'm going drinking". Single malt scotch in my view is something to be savored over a period of time and the saying "a little goes a long way" is so true in the case of single malts. This is much like going for fine food in an elegant restaurant where the quantity of food is often quite small presented in elegant dishware but the taste and experience, glorious. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

| I do pay attention to how much i have poured, I have a couple of great Glenfiddich tasting glasses which have a measure on the side of the glass. I dont drink everyday but when do i would pour anything from a 10ml to 30ml measure with no more than 100ml in total and rarely that much. When drinking in company rather than tasting and savouring by my self i may go over this limit but not by much, i dont drink to get drunk. |

| If at home over the weekend i would enjoy 3 or 4 whiskies each night, through the week 1 or 2 but not every night only if the mood takes me which would be no more than 1 or 2 nights through the week. |

I find myself drinking most nights now. I think I probably drink more over the winter though when I'm spending more time inside.
I wouldn't say that I drink 'too much', sometimes just one dram of an evening, usually two, occasionally a couple more. 'Too much' is a relative term but the NHS define binge drinking (for a man) as consuming 8 units of alcohol in a session. Four 35ml pours in an evening of whisky averaging 50%abv would still only be seven units. However I probably do break through the recommended 21 units in a week from time to time. _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."

It is not at all a stupid thread albo, it is always good to raise awareness of what we are consuming, it's fine to enjoy a drink but at the same time, we all need to look after our health and well-being and be aware of the amount we consume. _________________ There's no bad whisky. | Interesting that none of us think we are drinking too much. Perhaps it's denial or perhaps it's because we genuinely are whisky afficionados. |

37 people have voted so far on the poll. I don't even think we have 37 regular posters.
Which leads me to the conclusion that the lurkers are voting.

I don't drink as much as I could or should, I drink as much as I do and it's only half as much as I want, but it's more than I would if I didn't drink at all... I think .. |

Hello All,
I usually have a couple drams a day. I use a Glencairn Whisky glass like the one in the Avatar Gallery. I like it because it allows you to nose the Whisky and you can pour a nice dram that isn't too much for the glass, as when you attempt to fill a regular shot glass too full. My wife prefers rum or vodka, but will often share a dram of single malt with me out of a second Glencairn glass.

Welcome to the forum Unkei!
Glencairns glasses are said to be the best glasses for that very reason (nosing). So I role heatedly agree with your choice of glass.
Enjoy the forum feel free to ask any questions we are on the whole a friendly bunch of whisky geeks.
What whiskys have you enjoyed to date? |

| I would have 1 or 2 through the week and double that over the weekend, often it would be small measures 15 to 20 ml which allow me to taste a few different malts in the one sitting while not over doing it. |
