 Posted: Fri Dec 06, 2013 7:57 am Post subject: SMWS Duo - Hanyu (131.2) and Karuizawa (132.2) |

Yesterday afternoon, the SMWS released a "Japanese Duo" for £299 the pair. It contained:-
Hanyu (131.2) - 13 year old - 1st fill butt (ex sherry) - 646 bottles (also available on its own for £159.30)
Karuizawa (132.2) - 22 year old - refill butt (ex sherry) - 335 bottles (only sold as part of the "Japanese Duo").
I know that these two are younger than the Society's first releases from these two distilleries earlier in the month.
However, I still thought that £299 for the "Duo" was pretty good. |

Also released yesterday by the SMWS was a younger Japanese expression:
Karuizawa (132.6) - 12 years old - refill butt (ex sherry) - 553 bottles - 63% ABV - £108. |

| On the subject of Karuizawa, i was considering the 2 Karuizawa Spirit of Asama bottlings which The Whisky Exchange have which i believe are around 13 years old from sherry casks |

Interesting, i assume both the TWE bottlings are from the same batch of sherry cask matured Karuizawa as they are both described as being part of a vatting from about 77 casks, the 55% version is certainly more appealing fir a few pounds more. Another possibility on my christmas order. |

Other that first releases, the SMWS are generally drinking whiskies rather that collecting ones.
The thought of paying £300 for 13 and 22 year old whiskies really does nothing for me personally.
To put this in context Bifter from here picked up a 40yo Farclas for about £250, throw in a bottle of Ardbeg Ugi and your looking at a similar price. I know which 2 bottles I'd rather have in the cabinet personally.
That's not too mention the other options for spending £300.
Like the SMWS and I really do. But these don't represent value for me. |

If you've £300 to spend on whisky, there are indeed many options.
However, you'd struggle to find an ex-sherry single cask "Karuizawa" expression nowadays for as little as £299. Put in that light, the "Hanyu" in the Japanese Duo was effectively a freebie. |

Yes, I got to sample both the 131.2 Hanyu 13 year old and the 132.2 Karuizawa 22 year old.
Personally, I much preferred the Hanyu. It was absolutely oozing sherry and I'm a real 'sherry-head'. I'm guessing that it must have been first-fill. |
