Here's my taste notes from today for these 3 stellar drams.
Talisker 10
Nose-Sweet peat, sweet BBQ rub smoke, kippery, fresh bread baking in open oven, scones with sliced artichoke.
Palate-Spice, dark fruit. peppery and black cherry with an attitude.
Finish-Long, spice, pepper, hint of green chili, warming and hint of cherry throat lozenge.
Talisker Distiller's Ed.
Nose-Peat, smoked sugary rhubarb, chocolate fudge, shortbread cookies, steam off stewed cherries and waffs of parfume.
Palate-Menthol, shades of mint, mothballs in cedar chest, drying.
Finish-Lingering, mint, fresh breath, spearmint note.
Talisker 57 Degrees North
Nose-Peat, butterscotch, creme de menthe, salty, salt-water taffy.
Palate-Spice, pepper, hint of lime peel and orange marmelade.
Finish-Long, smoke, pepper and spice.
*** I have to say these are all excellent drams. The Distiller's Edition is probably my fav of the 3. The 57 Degrees North is next and is also full of character. Yet the raw excellence of the 10 shines as well.

Great notes as always. But it's interesting that you pick the DE as your favourite of the three. Personally, I'm not sure I could pick a favourite, but I could definitely say that the DE is my least favourite of the three by quite some distance.* As for the 10 and the 57 North, it probably depends on my mood which one I go for. I guess the 57 North would be my pick because, more than any other malt I've tried, it changes character completely when you add water and it feels like you get two whiskies for the price of one!
*In fact the DE is my least favourite Talisker out of the ones I've tried, which apart from the above three include the 18 (my personal favourite) and the Dark Storm. Having said all that, I haven't tried the Port Ruighe which has been heavily criticised in various quarters! And I'm not saying the DE is a flawed whisky - if I was scoring it for example I'd definitely give it 80 or above, with the others pushing 90. |

Alex, interesting characterization on your part. My attraction to the Distiller's Edition is related to its palate which for me includes a delightful mint profile which perseverates onto the finish. Another example of differentiation of opinion based on one's taste buds. There are no "suppose to's" in personal enjoyment of single malts. I enjoy Highland Park expressions (10, 12 and 15 year) for example but have always had issues with the 18 year which sometimes tastes to me like one big salt lick though lately I do enjoy it somewhat more. Most people rave about how fantastic it is yet I don't share that opinion really. Since the HP18 is fairly expensive here in Ontario, there are other single malts at that price that I would much rather buy. On the other hand, the Highland Park 30 Year is one of my favorites.

Absolutely, that's why I love talking about single malts after all! Personally I don't detect mint in the Distiller's Edition, could be that you have a more sensitive palate, or maybe it's just a difference between batches. I might try the same head to head soon since I have all three bottles on the go as well - maybe I'll include the Dark Storm too for good measure.

Ah, I would love to try the Highland Park 30! Sadly it's out of my price range at the moment. And yes, I remember your impressions of the 18. Personally I love it but haven't had any in a while. (I got my only bottle, now finished, when a supermarket sold it for £30 due to a pricing error when it should've been £60!) |
