|
|
Afternoon all,
Given that we are in a mini heatwave here in the UK and it's probably going to last at least another 3 days
Can I get some recomendations of what style or actual whisky people would drink in the warm weather?
I just don't seem to be tempted to open the whisky cabinet during times like this. I'm just wondering what you all prefer when the weather's like this. |

| My first choice for summer is Auchentoshan, prob classic, 12yo or valinch, or a Bladnoch .. Every now and then I might plump for a Auchentoshan threewood ... |

In the warm weather i wouldnt reach for a whisky as often but when i do i would go for something light such as anCnoc 12, Glenfiddich 12 or Glenlivet 12
I bet there are some cool refreshing whisky cocktails which you could make. |

Very interesting !
I have to speak heresy here .... I keep the malts locked up and go for long iced-laced VATs with the odd martini.
My preferences are for "big"malts (sherry bombs, islay and Tali) , I've never got a great taste for the lighter stiles. _________________ Talisker 18 - the rest are just details |

Thanks for the suggestions all. keep them coming. I'm in the back garden witha beer at the moment. It was 34 today in Edinburgh not sure what that is in old money but for Scotland it's fecking hot.
Still not feeling the Whisky vibe at the moment but I have to say the cocktail idea sound appealing. |

Funny you ask this, 2 day ago (when deciding what to open next as was running low) I punted for a Hakushu 12yo and a Rosebank 21yo.
Chuffed with the choice on both accounts, but the Hakushu is really lovely for a summers evening - crisp and light with enough complexity to keep things going.
If the weather continues, i'll be opening up an Ardbeg Blasda next as it think that'll be a nice summer dram. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

That's a great recommendation - I tried the Hakushu 12 for the first time a few weeks ago and it really impressed me. It's deceptively complex under the sweet and light exterior. The 43.5% ABV certainly helps.
Also, you can never go wrong with a Glenlivet 12! |

Yeah had a large dram of Hakushu 12 sat on my patio the other night, sun shining and the neighbours were having a BBQ - it just all fitted.
It's such a vibrant and inviting whisky, the puff of smoke on the finish really complimented the summers evening and the smell of the food from other the fence and was light enough for me to keep going back with a refreshed palate and the massive complexity made each sip heaven.
Result: My new favourite summer whisky....period.
(the 43% bottling is a touch better than the 43.5% one if you have the choice) _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

Have you ever tried a whisky and ice cream milshake drink. Works well with a mix of vanilla (or chocolate) and coffee ice cream IMO but i suppose you can use whatever you prefer.
Take a scoop of each ice cream, a double measure (50ml) of whisky (works well with a sherried whisky IMO) and a measure of orange liqueur. Blend all these together in a blender until smooth. It will be thick like a milkshake, a cool and refreshing drink. |

Lowland drams or, if you want something more refreshing a cocktail such as an Old Fashioned or a Rusty Nail. _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."

I think i will try it as a after dinner treat on a warm night. |

I finally decided on a frozen soy ice cream bar covered in dark chocolate followed by a Lagavulin 16. I discovered that cold+dark chocolate+peat= Satisfaction (on a scorcher of a day).
