The Lagavulin and Caol Ila distilleries today revealed the whiskies which they will release during the 2013 Feis ile (Islay Festival) which runs from 24th May to 1st June. This years festival bottlings are a Sherry Butt matured Lagavulin 18 year old and a Triple Cask matured Caol Ila. Both bottled at cask strength, both limited to 3000 bottles and both priced at £99.

Those of you familiar with the Islay festival bottlings will notice that they are releasing more bottles this year than they usually release. Dr Nick Morgan, Diageo's Head of Whisky Outreach, commented on this saying:

"In the past our special single-cask Festival bottlings have sold out very rapidly, leading to disappointment for some visitors, and unfortunately allowing others to profit from their misfortune by re-selling bottles at inflated prices. This was never our intention.

"So this year we are releasing slightly more generous volumes without compromising the quality of our offering. We hope this will enable all Feis visitors who want to buy a bottle as a memento of of their visit to do so."

What was the number of Islay Festival bottles they usually released?

I wonder if they will be as sought after now that ebay wont allow whisky to be listed, some of the profiteers who head to the Islay festival to buy up whisky to sell on may be put off, which is a good thing.

Kenny the 2012 Islay Festival bottlings were a Lagavulin 14 year old which was limited to 654 bottles and a Cail Ila 11 year old which was limited to 618 bottles. These were single cask bottlings priced at £85 on release and arguably more collectable than this years releases which each is a vatting of a number of casks, perhaps not quite as attractive to the whisky collectors and investors but I don't think those who buy it to drink will have any complaints.

I would guess each is a vatting of at least 5 or 6 casks. I wonder if they will sell out all bottlings during the festival. I wish they would do a bottling online or available from specialist whisky shops for those of us who cannot make it to the festival.

I am sure if they dont sell out they will be available in the distillery shop if you plan a visit any time soon after the festival. But i would suspect they will sell out.

£99 is steep for a vatting but i am sure they will still have no problem selling it.

£99 for an 18 year old, limited release, cask strength Lagavulin you can only get direct from the distillery?

..expensive? Bargain more like.

The 12year special retails for £70, and is stunning.

Previous Feis Ile Laga's hit auction sites for over £400.
