Now that ebay doesnt allow you to list whisky anymore, is there any other sites that allow it?
If theyve all stopped (because allegedly kids steal their parents credit cards and order 5500litre bottles of vodka and three cases of blue fizzy vodka based "pop") where will the collectables be sold? |

Alternative auction sites are:
The advantage with ebay was you didnt have to post off your whisky until you knew you had a buyer. |

I assume all these must really screw you down on the sale price though.
Do they make the same values as Ebay did?
And then will you lose around 20% of the final amount paid after listing and commision etc? |

ebay shall certainly be missed by sellers of lower value whisky. |

I have used SWA for buying and selling, they charge 10% buying and selling fees. You do have to wait around 3 weeks for your money when selling. I think it is £3 to sell an item, £4 for a reserve. They seem to attract plenty of buyers and are great to deal with.
Ebay did sell higher end whisky but you had the hassle of shipping, and worldwide buyers just moaned about shipping costs. |

I've bought many bottles from http://whiskyauction.com without any problems, the delivery is fast from Germany to the UK, and they have a useful online history of all past sales so it's easy to see what something might be worth.
I've wanted to use http://scotchwhiskyauctions.com for a while, but was put off by the notice on their website | Quote: | | "Please note whisky bottles in transit cannot be insured. By paying for bottles you accept that Scotch Whisky Auctions Ltd has no responsibility or liability for breakages." | This seems odd to me, all the other whisky shops and auction sites I buy from are able to provide insured delivery (although in 20 years of buying I've only ever had 2 bottles in the same pacel break because the courier dropped it on a concrete floor, and none go missing). When I'm buying malts worth perhaps several hundred pounds each I'm certinly not going to take the risk of uninsured delivery. I emailed them to query the above policy but never got any reply, which did nothing to relieve my suspicion.
I've also bought from the (relatively new) http://www.whisky-onlineauctions.com/ once in their first auction; their software calcualted the postage costs wrongly but I think this was just early teething problems and was quickly resolved by email. |

I might be proved wrong here but no shipping service will insure alcohol, so if you are paying extra for insurance then it is a waste of money.
Look up DHL, Parcelforce etc and other couriers and check the fine print.
whisky online tried to charge me £60 for insurance for 1x bottle, when I asked if this covered whisky, they could not answer me, so I did not pay.
I would ask for a tracking number minimum but if you know they are packing the item well protected then it should be ok. |

| The Kas Man, I think you are right, no shipping service will ensure alcohol. |

I agree many couriers do not offer insurance for glass items or alcoholic beverages. A web search shows that some do.
I sometimes buy from Bonhams auctions in Edinburgh, and they have an arrangement with the local Mailboxes Etc office who have packed and delivered whisky bottles won at auction to me on an insured basis on several occasions.
More importantly, for the UK the Sale of Goods Act clearly states that the seller is responsible for the goods until they are delivered to the customer. Therefore, whether or not the seller chooses to offer insured delivery they are liable in the event of loss or damage in transit, not the buyer. Any company trying to get out of this legal responsibility just seems a bit disreputable to me and not somewhere I'd personally choose to deal with.
....must go and have a dram now and stop worrying about smashed bottles |
