Here are my taste notes for this one from today:

Neat-

Nose: Citrus and honey, woody, polish, lemons, marshmallows, men's cologne and Granny Smith apples.

Palate: Fruity, syrup, floral, spice, creamy, pears, mouth-filling and smooth.

Finish: Lingering, fruit cocktail, hint of sticky lice, lemon and orange marmalade and hint of spice, parfumy, floral and citrus.

*This is a surprisingly fruity and mellow dram with acute and fresh aromas and flavors with a certain raw edge yet attractiveness to the olfactory sense and palate.

Sounds interesting. So do you think the move to an age statement for the Glenfiddich core expression represents a step up in quality?

I don't know if that was the marketing strategy behind it. However, I would say this one (the older dram I had today without age statement) is in my opinion somewhat different than the current 12 year old particularly on the nose with the old one showing polish essences which is quite appealing and not justfruityness. It has an edge that I have found with some other expressions that I enjoy, not so much a roughness but rather an acuteness of nose and palate which seems much more subdued in the 12 year old.. In some respects the older version tastes more mature to me subjectively speaking.

Cheers for the note and reply, i am sure it was good to get the chance to compare.

Not sure if the switch to an age statement for the entry level Glenfiddich was all to do with marketing strategy, i always thought it may also have been related to the amount and age of maturing stock they had in there warehouses so it made sense to switch to an age statement as it could be marketed easier and they had enough mature stock to support the move probably due to the slump in whisky sales in earlier years.

That makes good sense.
Very Happy
