Just thinking about the number of open bottles I have, and wondered what everyone else did as far as number of open bottles.

I currently have 6 open (2 Islay, 3 Spayside and a Highland). I tend to fluctuate between 5 and 10 open bottles at any one time.

I worry at the speed I drink bottles, that having too many open would result in me having bottles open for a long time, I had one on the go for 18 months, I didn't notice any degradation of the quality but it worries me having bottles open for that long.

So how about you?

At the last count i had between 40 and 50 bottles open. I have always believed that as the level in the bottle starts getting low, say below 50% this is when it can start affecting the character of the whisky. So when a bottle i have open drops below 50% it moves to the front of the queue for drinking.

I probably have around 20 bottles 80% plus full, 10 bottles 50% - 80%, 10 bottles 20% - 50% and 10 bottles with just 2 or 3 drams left. My problem is i cant resist opening something new which i havent tried before.

The number i have open can vary considerably, if i havent picked up many new bottles for a while my open bottle count can drop quite a bit, i have seen me with 20 bottles open.

I have about 25 bottles opened and around 10 of them have less than 25% in the bottle so i should be finishing quite a few in the near future and oening a few more.

I have a shelf which holds around 20 bottles depending on there size/shape and i dont open anymore until there is space on the shelf. I find this controls me from having too many open at once.

Alun, I feel like I was doing real homework here on this one. Took me a while to check out my personal "inventory" so to speak. I have 33 opened at the moment. Actually, I was a bit surprised at this amount but it makes sense at another level because I like to try them. Still have lots unopened and then there's the mini's which are separate of course and not discussed here. The average % abv done by general estimate is also a little higher than expected, probably around 46 to 48 abv and average age statement, again a quick estimate is about 16 years. Most of the opened ones are 3/4 full and I will try to work on the bottles with the least amounts but my taste buds often crave others. An interesting thread....

I have a cabinet with my open bottles, varies from 30 to 50 at any one time. It is around 50 bottles opened at present and i do make a point of finishing off bottles with low levels before opening any new bottles. My unopened bottles ar5e in a walk in wardrobe in a spare bedroom, probably around 300 bottles.

It sounds like my house Mac, the spare bedroom and many cupboards in the house have whisky in them. Not sure of the numbers but probably around 280 bottles, it was a lot more a few years ago but i had to curtail my buying habbits due to space. I will get around to drinking most of them one day.

I did a tally of all bottles last night and there's a total, opened and unopened of about 100 bottles. It is amazing how there never seems to be enough especially once one starts looking around the LCBO for more. However, with the high pricing scale here, one can run through a lot of $$$ very quickly with this "hobby".

Even with the pricing scale here, the £££ rack up quickly also, and we have the added 'disadvantage' that every other shop sells the stuff, so it's not just one shope of tempation. Razz

I see what you mean. Instead of "a kid in a candy store", it's "a candy store for every kid".
