Glenfiddich Cask of Dreams Canadian Ed. 2012 48.8%

Here are my taste notes for Glenfiddich Cask of Dreams 2012, just opened today:

Neat-

Nose: Citrus, creme brulee, nougat, hybrid of Bailey's Irish Cream and Grand Marnier Cognac (most captivating), almost a Nutella tone, combined almond paste and pistachio, vanilla bean with a hint of creme de menthe.

Palate: Creamy, smooth, warming, spicy berry syrup, mouth-filling, cherry mint lozenge, meaty, i.e., full-bodied, working through a layered cake of aged liqueurs.

Finish: Long, stewed berries with a whiff of menthol, camphor and Vick's Vapo Rub like being cared for by Mother, comforting and refreshing with returning waves of berry mint.

With Water-

Nose: Floral, parfumy, eau de cologne, fruity ice wine, vanilla bean ice cream and juicy fruit gum in a bath of fruit cocktail juice.

Palate: Spicy dates, warming, hint of pepper and smoke, cherry lozenge with Echinacea herb and pepper, quite mouth-filling.

Finish: Lingering, spice and pepper, hint of green chili, faint spearmint notes with menthol profile, reminiscent of the old Smith Brother's cough drops from childhood.

This is a bold dram with a heavy feel to it, deep tones and lasting finish. I must say I preferred it neat in spite of the 48.8 abv but I like Port Ellen's 60% abv neat also, so go figure. This Glenfiddich expression is quite different from what I'm used to, world's away from many of its other expressions that are often layered but light. This is a dynamite of a dram with a real punch worthy of considerable aficionado and pundit attention. The fact that I took a blind gamble and bought 5 bottles makes me so much the happier that I scooped up a winner.

Murray, it sounds like a great dram, very jealous i wont get to taste this one as i do have a soft spot for Glenfiddich especialy there limited releases and older stuff which do tend to be extra special in my experience and this sounds like it is up there with there other special limited releases.

I am sure this will be a sought after bottle in years to come, in fact i am sure Glenfiddich collectors/drinkers around the world would love to get there hands on it now. It was a good move buying 5 bottles,whether you decide to drink them or keep them in the collection.

Enjoy the rest of the bottle and the others if you decide to open them.
