So, I listed all the whiskies I had on another thread, nothing standout in there, although I wanted to come back to this post in years to come to see the journey I've been on.

I'm not yet confident enough to go out and splash more than £75+ on a bottle. I know in the scheme of things that's peanuts, although it is for a relative novice.

This is one of the reasons I haven't yet taken the plunge at SMWS, the annual fee is more than I would spend on 3 bottles Embarassed

Can you remember the first 'more' expensive bottles you bought?

One of the first was Highland Park 18, remembering that here in Canada single malts are much higher as a rule than in Europe. Another is the Glenlivet XXV. However, another way of looking at expensive drams is how much one pays for a dram at a classy pub. The first really expensive drams, by ounce at a pub that I had that were in the $30-$45 Canadian dollars per ounce, i.e., 19 to 28 pounds per ounce, would include a 22 year old Port Ellen, a Highland Park 30 and Ardbeg 32 Year old.

My first more expensive whisky would have been from the Macallan back in the 1970s, i already loved the Macallan and treated myself to some of the more expensive vintage bottlings, i wish i had kept some as they would be worth a small fortune now.

My advice is if you are going to step up in price then go for a brand you already know you like and read the reviews on it and you cant really go wrong. Having said that you dont need to go over £75 to find some outstanding whiskies. There are plenty of whiskies to explore before stepping up the price range.

I can very well remember the first more expensive bottle I got.

Actually it started with the wife picking up a single cask bottle of Glen Spay for me to celebrate my son being born, a 25yr old and it cost £50ish, at the time that was by far the most Id spent (used to stick to the £20 - £30 supermarket bottles). After that we were on holiday in the highlands and took a day trip to Oban, where I visited the distillery, had a look at the wears available there, standard 14yr old anda distillers edition, all available at various outlets, but they also had a distillery only bottle, which was £65, I walked out wthout the bottle. back to the car to set off, when the wife asked me if I had of picked up a bottle which one I would I have got. I answered the distillery only bottle and she told me to go back and pick it up. Then earlier in the year, I wanted a nice bottled becasue Id done some serious overtime in work and as a treat to myself wanted to pick up a nice bottle. After going to the Whisky fringe in Edinburgh, I really liked the Black Art 3, so a couple of weeks later after much deliberation, I picked up a bottle, that one was just short of £100 and well worth it in my opinion. So where next? at some point I've got to push past the 3 figuers mark, in 2013? quite possibly, just dont tell the wife Wink

I've been a SMWS member for a couple of years so I've regularly spent up to £70 on bottles and I've had a couple of DB bottles such as HP18 that retail in the £60-£70 range. However it was only last month I broke the £75 mark with a SMWS 25yo Glen Ord that was £84. Unfortunately they recently ran a sale and I could have got 15% off but it's still worth every penny! Really looking forward to opening it. Top Malt

That's a nice little story. That black art has been on my radar; although only ever had Rocks before.

To be honest, I can only really afford to be shelling out about 75-100 a month on whisky currently and I would rather have 3 bottles to choose from rather than 1.

That said, I will be nudging all my friends and family at birthdays and Christmases from hereon in!

I would also add that Big Mac has it spot on, there is no need at all to go over the £75 range, there are plent of excellent quality bottles out there under that. I just spent £107 on 2 bottles, OP 17 and a Balblair 97, both around the £50 mark. For now I'd stick to that, if you have £70 - £100 a month to spend, I'd happily have 2 bottles like the above each month rather than 1 bottle of the Black Art. Perhaps you could save the extravagant bottle for birthday or xmas/new year?
