Purely for financial reasons I'm going to allow my membership of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society to lapse in the new year. In a recession, at a time when we are trading up houses and my wife is out of work with childcare, etc, it's unfortunately a luxury that must be sacrificed, even if only temporarily.
As much as I am disappointed to have to do this, I have occasionally considered leaving before. There is a lot of marketing to endure, prices are rarely discounted and you really do have to try before you buy as there are some real howlers, especially due to the dreaded S-word. However the benefits far outweigh the downsides. The product is fairly unique and mostly of a very good standard and the value of some releases can be astounding. Add to that the use of the venues if you are lucky enough to have one local enough to visit regularly.
I hope to be back soon but, in the meantime, I probably know enough members to be able to visit now and then and/or make proxy purchases. _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."

bifter, I'm sorry to hear that that you have to give up something you enjoy but I certainly understand where you are coming from. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

| I have had a few outstanding SMWS bottles in the past bought for me by a friend through his recommendation and membership. As there is no venue close to me i have never seen the point in a membership and as my friend whos taste i trust always lets me know of something special which i may like. He has the same must try before you buy attitude after having more than his fair share of howlers but he is in Edinburgh every week so he can pop into one of the SMWS venues. |

Sorry to hear that bifter. I have been enjoying yours and albo's posts on the SMWS releases. I was considering it for a christmas present to myself from the Mrs (i would have told her later ) but just placed a £400 order for whisky this week so the SMWS will have to wait. |

It's a sad day, though you know you're always welcome to use my card and visit whenever you wish.
You'll still be coming along to the monthly outturns meet ups though I trust |
