The Balvenie core range of single malt whiskies has just gotten bigger with the addition of a 17 year old expression of the very popular Balvenie Doublewood.

I am told that this new 17 year old version shares the same DNA and the honeyed, spicy characteristics as the 12 year old, but it is distinctly different, with deeper vanilla notes, hints of green apple, creamy toffee and a striking richness and complexity.

The Balvenie DoubleWood 17 Year Old, 43% ABV has an RRP of £75 will available in the UK from 1st November 2012 and in the U.S. from October 2012 with a RRP of $129.99.

This looks fantastic, the 12 year-old Doublewood is already among the best whiskies of its kind. It's a tad expensive, but it'll probably be worth it!

Yes looks good, i agree the price is a bit steep but then again the prices of all aged whisky is going that way now but i will certainly give this one a try at least once.

Well, Alex, you're vote of confidence for the Balvenie Doublewood 12 tipped the scales for me to go out today and buy a bottle at the LCBO here in Ontario. I've never had a
drop of this dram so with your recommendation, the time has come.
Very Happy

The Balvenie Doublewood 12 is an old favourite of mine, one of the few i always have in the cabinet. If the reviews are good i will add the 17 to my christmas list i think.

Yes i think this could be very good, a 17 year old balvenie with a decent sherried finish appeals to me. Looking forward to trying it

The Doublewood 12 is an old favourite of mine also so to hear they have released a 17 is good news, bit of a high price tag though so i hope it is worth it

I am sure this will be very popular given the popularity of the Doublewood 12 but i wonder if they have priced too many out of regular buying with this price tag. I will certainly give it a go but it will have to be a cracker for me to repeat buy, but i am hoping it is.

On a side note i would love to see the Balvenie release a younger 12ish year old Portwood.

£75 for a 17 year old Confused

I'll pass unless the reviews are outstanding.

You can get some feirly serious whisky for that price tag, it need to be good to live with that price hanging round it's neck.

My thoughts precisely, e.g. Lagavulin 16 is £45, Highland Park 18 is £65, I'm even getting cracking 20yo cask strength whiskies from SMWS for less than £70. This is just shy of Dalmore territory, can they really get away with it?

There is definitely a move among some producers and outlets to push prices up or pitch themselves at the 'premium' sector (marketing talk for 'more than it's worth'). I accept supply and demand must have an influence - there is currently a boom in whisky sales and this is naturally difficult to cater for 20 or 30 years ahead of the event. Some producers seem to be bumping up prices, some are putting out NAS expressions, some are doing both (looking at you Macallan!). In summary, I'd like to sample this but I don't think I'll be buying a bottle!

I shall wait for some reviews i think, quite surprised and disappointed that they have launched it at this price.
