|
|
I tried my first drams of this one today neat and with water. Here are my tasting notes:
The Peat Monster by Compass Box, 46%abv.
Neat:
Nose: Blast of alcohol, sailor aboard a ship locked in fog amidst heavy sea air, peat in a bed of lamb's wool, moist cave aroma and a lemon grass carpet.
Palate: Peat, medicinal, iodine, warming, peppery but fading.
Finish: Oily, oak , short finish, old leather, wisps of a smoldering bonfire. This lion has been tamed but upon prodding can roar as it crosses the palate but fades on the finish; leaves you wanting something more though it has its moments.
With Water:
Nose: Something floral in the midst of a milder peat, sweet light smoke and a smokehouse with the door open.
Palate: Now it comes, heavy peat and then deepening spice and pepper....WOW! (much heavier than when served neat). Just the bang for your buck that you want.
Finish: Long finish now, peat holds its own with smoke and ash, oily, a hint of lime in a bed of spice and delicate dark chocolate.
A bit of water rejuvenates the lion's bite and makes the beast, i.e., Monster, live up closer to its billing. It opens up in intensity and range of aromas and flavors. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

| The Peat Monster is one i havent tried. I think it is supposed to have a good portion of Ardmore in it, i am sure i read that somewhere. I have had Ardmore Traditional Cask and thought it was a decent dram |

| Thats right Mac, i believe it is a blend of Ardmore and an un-named Islay. Not the monter the name suggests but a very decent smoky dram. |

| The founder of Compass Box recently said in a tasting that it's a vatting of Ardmore, Ledaig, and Laphroaig. |

Alex, that's quite interesting. It makes a lot of sense to me. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."
