The new edition of Unfiltered, the SMWS quarterly magazine, is out and there are a few column inches about a new Islay distillery, making it number 129 on the SMWS list. The clues are that it has a 2,000l still and produces 100,000l-120,000l p.a. along with a 'focus on uniqueness of product, authenticity and location.' This tallies with Kilchoman of course. Bottling 129.1 A Smoky, Peachy Yoghurt of Loveliness sounds intriguing but it is not in the July outturn. Will have to inquire with the staff next time I'm in.
Another bottling mentioned in the magazine, G9.1 Sweet and Sour M?lange, which is also absent from the July outturn, heralds another addition to the distillery list. This time a central Lowlands distillery 'better known for its single malts, having only started producing grain around 20 years ago'. It is also mentioned as the favourite dram of Cpt Haddock of Tintin fame. Being the only distillery with both pot stills and continuous stills (if I'm not mistaken) this unequivocally identifies it as Loch Lomond. I keep an open mind about the grain product but, according to the Malt Madness Web site at least, Loch Lomond malts are usually pretty dire!

| I have never actually tried Loch Lomond single malt due to the poor reviews i have read, it is one of the few single malts in production that i havent tried, in fact it may be the only one. |

| I have been considering giving the SMWS another go, i had membership a few years ago but let it run out. There doesnt seem to be many affordable to drink unique bottlings being released at the moment from the distilleries so SMWS could be worth another try as i am always on the look out for something different and of a higher quality than the core range bottlings we see and some of the independent bottlers have gotten gready for the money and the quality of the whisky often doesnt justify the price. |

James, there aren't that many bargains at SMWS and the prices have been creeping up there too. Unfortunately many of the recent sherried whiskies have also been heavily sulphured but, as you'll know, the offerings are fairly unique. I find the main benefits are the access to the venues and the ability to try before you buy.
If in Edinburgh, Cadenhead's are always good for advice and interesting bottlings and host regular 'Jolly Toper' tastings. _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."
