Something like Bowmore Dawn

Hi...

So I'm a bit of a newbie to this whole thing, but I've lately had some extra money and am putting together my first "real" liquor cabinet. I find that I often tend towards obscure and usually halfway decent things without even knowing about them. Anyway, not too much of a scotch drinker but every once in a while when I'm with friends and smoking a cigar I will have some. I've got some ritzy friends so I often get to try something nice (thanks!). Can't remember all of them but I remember the one I liked best was something called Dawn (which is my name, so I remembered it). I did research and found it is by a company called Bowmore, and is not made any more. Wondering if any of y'all could steer me in a direction for something similar? I recall liking the peat but not TOO peaty flavor of it, something floral in there too. We had a nice couple of nights with this a few summers back.

Actually Talisker 10 is smokey and sweet and might be the answer to your question. It sells for $75.00 in Canada, so not unreasonable and probably cheaper elsewhere.

Another few possibilities would be Bowmore 12 years, Bowmore Enigma 12 years or Lagavulin 12 years (one of my favorites).

Hi Dawn

Bowmore Dawn was a port cask finished whisky so it was peaty but had a lovely rich fruity (grapes and plums ) sweetness from the port cask.

There was a limited release port cask matured Bowmore 1991 16 year old which is still available from The Whisky Exchange

There was the Bowmore Voyage Port Wood Finish available at The Whisky Exchange but quite expensive now as it was releeased in 2000 and was a limited edition.

There was also a Bowmore 1988 21 year old port cask matured but more expensive and also available from The Whisky Exchange

Dawn if you are looking for something lightly peated then have a look at Caol ila 12, Bunnahabhain 12, Bruichladdich Laddie Ten although none of these have a port influence which is actually quite rare to find in peaty Islay whiskies they are all very good lightly peated Islay whiskies and at a decent price. Also i am sure you would like the Talisker 10 Quaich1 mentioned.

Very cool, thanks for the replies! I happen to live in LA where there is 1. a fancypants whiskey bar downtown, that has most of these 2. a killer wine and spirits store that has these for reasonable prices.

Even though it's going to be expensive to try these out (12-20 a glass, yikes!) I'd rather do that than plop $60, $80, $100 on a bottle I might not like. A classy night out (now I just gotta find a man to go with....

The Bowmore range in the UK differs from the US so not sure Dawn was readily available here but, either way, I've not tried it. However, if you were looking for something fairly peaty with a port cask influence the Longrow CV is worth a try. It's NAS release from Springbank, a blend of bourbon, sherry and port casks. The nose is great, quite complex for a fairly young malt. I wrote up a review in the Tasting Notes section just recently too.

As an alternative to Bowmore i would suggest Highland Park 12, Bruichladdich Laddie 10, Isle of Jura Superstition, Oban 14 and Springbank 10
