Hi hendo13
The Macallan Gran Reserva 18 is a collectable bottle from the very popular Macallan range. As you may know it is a limited edition whisky and Macallan released a 1979 and 1980 vintage.
The 1979 Gran Reserva was sourced from first fill Spanish Oak sherry butts (500 litres capacity ) with the 1980 coming from 11 butts and 21 hogsheads (250 litres capacity ) - again all first fill casks. The age of the youngest cask used in the 1980 was 4th December 1980 and the vatting married at the distillery prior to being bottled in November 1999 - making it almost a 19 year old single malt offering. I think they then released a 1981 & 1982 Gran Reserva but these where not rated as highly as the first 2 releases.
As far as value goes i have seen these bottles going for £300 (shop prices) which obviously will include VAT and the shop mark up so i would guess around £200 in a private sale. Having said that Macallan is one of the most sought after Scotch malt whiskies and you could get a lot more.
Incidentally i have tried this and it is brilliant so if you are tempted to break the seal yourself you will not be disappointed .
