At this time of year we get the whisky authors/critics naming their best whisky in the world 2011, never mind what they say
What is the best whiskys you have tasted this year
It doesnt need to be a new release, just new to you, anything counts, what have you tasted this year that you consider outstanding
If enough of you respond perhaps we could could narrow it down to a www.ScotchMaltWhisky.co.uk whisky of the year. |

2011 has been my year of discovery of Aberlour A'bunadh. I am not entirely sure how this one had evaded me up until the start of this year but at it no longer is. I have tried 3 batches through the year and loved each of them - no sulpher. I ahve always been keen on sherry influence on my malt so A'bunadh really just takes this to a new level. Has been great getting know it and look forward to finding more batches. _________________ Jonny

A very special whisky i have had this past year is the Brora 25 year old 2008 special release, not the peatiest Brora but an outstanding whisky. Another excellent whisky i have had this past year is a blended malt, Compass Box Flaming Heart 10th Anniversary bottling was excellent.
And of course the Glenfiddich Foundation Reserve was excellent and i wouldnt have gotten to try it if it wasnt for this forum |

| Two stand out for me - they won't be new to most of you here, but the best new malts I tried this year have been without a doubt the Lagavulin 1994 Distillers' Edition and the Talisker 57' North. Between the two, I'd say the Lagavulin impressed me more. |

One that stood out for me this year was the Jura 21 year old, i really didnt expect to like it as much but it is excellent.
If i was to name a blend it would be the Ballantines 30, tried for the first time this year and it is outstanding. |

For me it's a single cask 36 YO Glenburgie from the SMWS called 'An Angel Fallen to Earth (104.13). Luckily for me I still have half a bottle left.
The other stand out whisky as always is Talisker 18YO. This dram NEVER ceases to amaze me in it's powerful elegance, and never disappoints. _________________ Rob Hughes

One that really stood out for me in the past year is Auchroisk 20 year old 2010 Diageo special release, superb.
A few more are:
Tomatin 32 year old 1975 Douglas Laing Old & Rare
Highland Park 25 year old
Cadenheads Longmorn 1990 18 year old
SMWS Glen Moray 26 year old 35.40 from a refill sherry butt
Highland Park 18, Ardbeg Uigeadail and Lagavulin Distillers Edition all brilliant as ever. |

I can now update my last post and agree with Alexppp - I tried the Lagavulin 1994 last night and it ws fantastic. I have always been an Islay fan but this malt bought something new with its PX finishing. Very sweet on the tip of the tongue to start followed by that big Lagavulin hit, a real contrast and then an incredibly long finish. Well done Lagavulin! _________________ Jonny

| I dont buy many expensive bottles to drink but earlier this year i treated myself to a bottle of Talisker 25 year old 58.1% abv 2007 release and it was brilliant, by far the best Talisker i have tasted, loved it. |

I taste a lot of new whiskies every year but without a doubt year in and year out these 3 are always amongst my best whiskys; Highland Park 18, Ardbeg Uigeadail and Talisker 18
One whisky which was new to me this year and it was excellent was the Gordon & Macphail Glen Grant 25 year old. As i say an excellent dram and great price (around £60) considering it is 25 years old |

I keep meaning to try a Talisker 25, but last time I was going to, I got the 36 YO Glenburgie single cask instead. Maybe I'll treat myself to a Talisker 25 for Chrimbo! _________________ Rob Hughes

My stand out whisky for 2011 has to be the Glenfarclas 40yo, a FANTASTIC nose followed up with a great taste, second up for me was the single barrel 1996 bottle your own from Auchentoshan.... |

I have to mention this first, the Glenfiddich Foundation Reserve was probably my bargain buy of the year, a single cask Glenfiddich for £50 and on top of that it turned out to be an outstanding whisky, still got a bottle tucked away but i doubt it will survive this Christmas or Hogmanay
Some that i tried for the first time this year were the Compass Box Flaming Heart which was excellent. I was very impresssed with the Tomintoul 14. Glen Grant 1992 Cellar Reserve was outstanding.
As far as blends go, i tried the Chivas Regal 25 this year and i was very impressed, brilliant.
As always my regular favourites were Ardbeg 10 & Uigeadail, Talisker 18, Highland Park 18, Glenfiddich 15 & 18 and Glenfarclas 15 |
