I am looking at getting a bottle of 1985 whisky for a friend of mine and would like to know if any of you have any comments on the Glenrothes 1985 or another whisky from 1985 to the same value of about £75.00 , I know the value will limit the choice, he also likes Islay whisky.

I've never had a Glenrothes myself - but coincidentally, I was with a friend last night who is an Islay fan and was given Glenrothes as a gift - he loves it, says it's one of his favourites now.

My experience with the Glenrothes vintage bottlings have been a bit hit or miss, they have either been excellent or i have had a couple which have been no more than average. Cant comment on the 1985 as i havent tried it.

I have had a bottle of the Glenrothes 1985 and i very much enjoyed it. The short note i made about it is:- orange marmalade, vanilla, touch of oak and spice, delicious. Very easy to drink and anyone who likes whisky should love it, i would recommend it.

There will be a few good Islay malts to pick from for £75 but you wont get a 1985 bottling for £75 i would have thought, just depends how significant the year is.

I havent had the 1985 but i have to say i wasnt too impressed with the Glenrothes which i have tried as they were a litlle sulphur tainted which isnt for me. I recall the 1994 vintage was sulpur tainted and there was one other which i cant remember the vintage off hand. On the other hand the Glenrothes Three Decades was very good.
