I tried my first drams of this one today neat and with water. Here are my tasting notes:

The Peat Monster by Compass Box, 46%abv.

Neat:

Nose: Blast of alcohol, sailor aboard a ship locked in fog amidst heavy sea air, peat in a bed of lamb's wool, moist cave aroma and a lemon grass carpet.

Palate: Peat, medicinal, iodine, warming, peppery but fading.

Finish: Oily, oak , short finish, old leather, wisps of a smoldering bonfire. This lion has been tamed but upon prodding can roar as it crosses the palate but fades on the finish; leaves you wanting something more though it has its moments.

With Water:

Nose: Something floral in the midst of a milder peat, sweet light smoke and a smokehouse with the door open.

Palate: Now it comes, heavy peat and then deepening spice and pepper....WOW! (much heavier than when served neat). Just the bang for your buck that you want.

Finish: Long finish now, peat holds its own with smoke and ash, oily, a hint of lime in a bed of spice and delicate dark chocolate.

A bit of water rejuvenates the lion's bite and makes the beast, i.e., Monster, live up closer to its billing. It opens up in intensity and range of aromas and flavors.

The Peat Monster is one i havent tried. I think it is supposed to have a good portion of Ardmore in it, i am sure i read that somewhere. I have had Ardmore Traditional Cask and thought it was a decent dram

Thats right Mac, i believe it is a blend of Ardmore and an un-named Islay. Not the monter the name suggests but a very decent smoky dram.

The founder of Compass Box recently said in a tasting that it's a vatting of Ardmore, Ledaig, and Laphroaig.

Alex, that's quite interesting. It makes a lot of sense to me.
