Whisky Forum - Quality Whiskies That Are Overlooked?

I am alway looking for a new whisky to try and you always hear about certain whisky brands getting praised on this forum and other whisky sites. We are always reading how good whiskies such as Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Macallan, Glenlivet etc are.

Which whisky brand or even individual bottling do you think is under rated and deserves more praise and would be enjoyed by many more whisky drinkers if only they knew about them and they received the deserved praise Question

I will say Longmorn 15 and the 16 year old which replaced it.

Here are a couple of distilleries that never get much of a mention and in my experience have always turned out decent whisky.

Balblair

For me, Caol Ila is a very under-rated malt, and a bargain usually. Makes for a great 'everyday' dram for an Ilay drinker such as myself!

I very much agree with Glen Elgin

I would add

Clynelish 14 never gets mentioned much and is excellent

Braeval is rarely mentioned and is very good

I personally think that Aberlour is a very underated whisky. The 10 year old is superb and the A'Bunadh bottlings are consistently good.

For me it's Auchentoshan three wood and Ben Nevis 14 sherry and 13 portwood, okay both the Ben Nevis's are now long gone but if they release anything similar I'd get a few.

Tomatin distillery produces some very good whisky which doesnt often get much of a mention. The Tomatin 12 and 15 are both very good. The old version of Tomatin 18 was very good and the new version is very good indeed IMO.

With all the interest in the smoky Islay whiskies i am surprised Smokehead from Ian Macleod doesnt get more praise, they have 3 botles and all are truely excellent. They are Smokehead, Smokehead Extra Rare which is a travel retail only bottling and the Smokehead Extra Black 18 year old. If you you are a bit of a smokehead yourself then this was made for you.

I never hear Glengoyne mentioned very much and there range is very good, i especially like the Glengoyne 12 cask strength and the Glengoyne 17 year old.

You dont hear Aberfeldy mentioned much and the Aberfeldy 12 and 21 year old are both lovely rich Highland malts and the 21 year old can be had for a pretty good price considering its age.

Glenfarclas 17 never seems to get much of a mention, it always seems to be the equally excellent 15 that receives all the praise. IMO the 17 is brilliant also.

I would completely agree with the mentions for Auchentoshan 3 wood.

Glendronach also deserves a mention here. Fantastic malts and recent new ownership seems to be doing good things. The 33YO is a personal favourite.

I would agree Balblair is one you dont hear mentioned much, the Balblair 1989, 1990, 1997 are all excellent whiskies IMO

I agree with a few of the suggestions here. Glen Elgin, Tomatin and Aberfeldy are among my favourites but they rarely crop up in conversation.

But I don't really see how Aberlour is an 'overlooked' whisky - it's available in practically all supermarkets and often comes up in suggestions etc. Same with Caol Ila to a certain extent.

i agree the Glen Elgin doesnt get the praise it deserves the Glen Elgin 16 year old cask stength is excellent.
