Hi all,

im considering buying some newly filled casks at a couple of disilleries in Speyside. Ive enquired about storage/insurance costs, and ive been told to expect to pay roughly £1/month/cask.

The person i spoke with wasnt the most helpful and ive been left wondering whether that price is for Hoggies, Barrells, or Butts? And is that a reasonable price to pay?

Any help from anyone with experience in these areas would be great.

Normally warehousing costs and insurance are covered by the initial costs of the cask purchase, normally the first 10 years and you would have to pay more for addtional warehousing/insurance if you want to mature you barrel longer when that 10 years has passed.

Here is a good example from Glengoyne of costs
www.glengoyne.com/cask_sales/assets/PriceList-2010.pdf

Or do you mean you wish to purchase a cask and transport it under bond to another warehousing facility other than the distillery that produced the whisky.

Interesting, going by the Glengoyne cost analysis it would then be around £16 per bottle at 43% and £21 per bottle at cask strength.

With reference to the Glengoyne link, I would say these are typical prices you would expect to pay and the prices usually include storage and insurance. It sounds like whoever you spoke to was not at all helpful.

Check with Martin at WhiskyBroker (info@whiskybroker.co.uk).
He should be cheaper than most other IB.
