I need to buy a present for a 30th birthday - natural thought is to get a 30 year old.

What does the forum think in terms of something fantastic and possibly even something that appreciate in value?

Personally i would say all of these are excellent

Glenfiddich 30 Year Old
Brora 30 Year Old
Talisker 30 Year Old
Balvenie 30 Year Old
Laphroaig 30 Year Old

As an investment i would go for a Brora 30 year old diageo special release.

Have you considered Port Ellen. If you can get a hold of a Port Ellen 30 year old, there was a Port Ellen 2009 special release from diageo which waa excellent but i doubt you would get a hold of a bottle now, well not unless you want to pay loads for it. Douglas Laing have a few Port Ellen 30 in there Old & Rare Platinum Selection and any Port Ellen i have had from DL has been excellent.

Have you thought about Old Pulteney can be bought from The Whisky Exchange and Royal Mile Whiskies.

I've heard really good things about Gordon & MacPhail's Strathisla 30yo.

However, if you're looking to spend a lot more then i'd go with the Brora. You can buy a sample at Master of Malt if you want to try it before committing to a bottle.

Personally i have had the Highland Park 30, Balvenie 30 and Glenfiddich 30 and all 3 were excellent especially the HP 30. Also got the Glenfarclas 30 at christmas which i have read good things about but i havent opened it yet.

I've had the Glenfarclas 30 and it's an excellent whisky, quite affordable too given its age. About half the price of Glenfiddich and 1/3 the price of the Balvenie, and I don't think Glenfiddich is twice as good if that makes any sense.

I doubt that it was the Old Pulteney 30 year old Smile a brilliant price for the 12 though.

Old Pulteney 30 all the way. The tropical fruit complexity of it just knocked my socks off! And, as a bonus, it comes in a really nice presentation box. Top Malt
