Yesterday evening I was very privileged to attend the launch tasting of the new limited edition The Balvenie Peated Cask 17 year old. It is a marriage of single malt Scotch whiskies finished in peated casks and new American oak.

You can read more about it here:

This looks very interesting, how peated was it William, and was it as good as it sounds.

It is lightly peated. It has the characteristic Balvenie sweet honey, vanilla notes but also a lovely light smokiness and spice from the new oak casks.

I have had a couple of the balvenie 17 limited editions now (sherry oak, madiera and rum cask) and they have all been pretty good. I believe they had an Islay Cask a few years back but i missed that one but i think i will give this a go.

What have they done with the heavily peated batch of whisky, now that would interest me also.

They still have that sitting in the their warehouse Fergie, i think we may see it in years to come in some form or another, whether straight or vatted with non peated balvenie. It will be 9 year old now so my guess is it will be at least a few years before we see it.

Maybe it will be the 17 year old limited edition in 8 years time. Now that could be good, a 17 year old heavily peated balvenie Smile

I am sure they will have no problem selling this given the popularity of peated malts and the following Balvenie already has. I wonder if they will ever release the heavily peated batch or just keep it to create peated barrels to give us peated finishes.

I loved the balvenie 17 Rum Cask, the best so far i thought out of what is turning out to be an ongoing series. I will have to watch for this new one at the airport next month, could be interesting with the peat and spice.

I love Balvenie. The Port Wood is simply sublime but the Madeira finish did nothing for me. I don't get the Peated Cask. I think's it's a marketing ploy. The Single Barrel is my all-time favourite Balvenie.

The port wood is excellent., thank goodness is part of the core range and not a limited edition release Top Malt

I agree last years 17 year old madiera was disappointing. I dont see in what way the new Peated Cask can be a marketing ploy, i would think balvenie are just offering yet another expression of what has seemed to become a series limited edition 17 year olds. I think it will be interesting, 17 year old balvenie. some finished in new wood and some in a peated cask married together, i will give it a try.
