Bruichladdich - Which cask would you go for?

2010 fresh bourbon barrel (£1250)
2010 Loch Indaal fresh bourbon barrel (limited edition of 150 casks) [£1950]

Would i be correct in saying that he Loch Indaal fresh bourbon barrel is filled with heavily peated whisky the figure 50ppm approx rings a bell. If so this would be my personal choice.

I assume both these prices you quote include storage and are for the same size barrel, just the Loch Indaal is heavily peated.

Frankie, you are correct on all counts.

So you think it's a sound purchase?

From a personal viewpoint the Loch Indaal is the whisky i would prefer myself. Purchasing as a investment is a whole other matter, you will have a lot of whisky to sell, only you can know whether you will be able to do that and there can be a lot of work involved in getting it bottled and sold with sometimes not a great deal of profit for the long investment and work put in.

I think there would be more interest in the highly peated cask but as Frankie says only you can know if you will be able to sell this on in 10 years time.

Many people buy casks and in 10 or so years end up selling the whole cask to independent bottlers as they didnt think about the future costs when intially purchasing the cask. Personally i think a cask is a great buy for a whisky club or a large group of friends and family but a lot of work for an individual if they havent got some sort of outlet for the whisky when it has matured.

I would go for the Loch Indaal fresh bourbon barrel as i think there would be more interest in this once it has matured so should be easier to sell.
