Rate these whiskies

Just for fun, rate these bottles in order of preference: (no particular reason, just want to see what others think of the bottles I've got open)

Talisker 10
Talisker 18
Laphroaig 10
Glenmorangie Original
Bowmore 12 Enigma
Aberlour 10
Balvenie Doublewood

To be honest i wouldnt have an order of preference, i enjoy them all and it just depends on my mood and the occasion. I drink them all although the Glenmorangie Original i wouldnt normally purchase much, i probably go more for the glenmo wood finishes.

I think i have a bottle of each of them open (except the enigma) at the moment and like Gregor my preferemce shifts depending on what i fancy at the time although the Talisker 18 is a bit special but this is shown in the price of it compared to the others.

I love the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, another worth a look is Glenmorangie Nectar D'or which is a Sauternes Finish and excellent IMO.

Also noticed that the Glenmorangie Lasanta sherry finish now has an age statement "12 year old" anyone had the new version, more to the point is it worth trying.

I noticed the new Lasanta with the 12 year old age statement over at The Whisky Exchange, strangely i cant see any mention of it on the Glenmorangie website unless i am looking in the wrong place.

TWE site says "Updated in summer 2010, Glenmorangie Lasanta now boasts an age statement of 12 years old." So it is pretty new and is on sale for the same price as the NAS version. the original Lasanta was a minimum 10 year old so i guess there wont be much difference just perhaps a bit more sherried, i would guess the extra time has been spent finishing in the sherry cask.

But this order isn't that rigid - the top 3 will always be the top 3 since Talisker 18 and any Laphroaig would be among my favourite drinks. After that, it depends on my mood - if I'm in a peaty mood I'd put the Bowmore Enigma above the Balvenie and Glenmorangie.

I agree with you about the Glenmo Original by the way - I think it's subtler than a lot of people give it credit for. It's more than just a light easy drink. (though of course it ticks those boxes perfectly as well)

I like them all, although it is a while since i have had a bottle of the Talisker 18 which i agree is very good. Which one i choose just depends on the situation, time of day, my mood, whether just after or before a meal although i am not in to this drinking whisky with a meal or matching it with a particular food. I have always thought this is whisky companies trying to market whisky like it is wine. IMO whisky should be enjoyed by itself.

I have never got in to drinking whisky with a meal either, i like to relax and enjoy it by itself.

I like them all but if i was to express an order of preference it would be:

As far as whisky and food is concerned i dont really pair them up but sometimes a bit of dark chocolate with a heavily sherried malt is very enjoyable. The chocolate is probably my subsitute for the cigars which i gave up a few years ago which went very well with a sherried malt.

Regarding whisky and food, I agree it's not really as suited to it as wine, but like Big Mac I sometimes have chocolate with the heavily sherried ones. (like I do with cognac) Also sometimes I find that unsalted nuts serve as a really good palate-cleanser when drinking.

I usually have some packs of Scottish oatcake biscuits to cleanse the palate, unfortunately the packets never last long as i love the oatcake biscuits also
