Hi, have just recently decided to collect whiskies. I decided on the flora and fauna range and have a few, however decided to buy some others which I am not familiar with and was wondering if anyone had any information about them.

One is a MacAllan 10 year old 75cl matured in sherry wood - has no date on it and has an older style label. Was just wondering when it was distilled/bottled.

Another is a Speyside Special Reserve 26 years by Pittyvaich - any info on this would be good as can't find anything online.

Thanks for any help.

Hi kev and welcome to the SMW forum.

I believe the Flora & Fauna Series was first released by United Distillers (Diageo) and consisted of Scotch Single Malts from the distilleries that they owned and they were released to highlight the diversity of Scotland's Whisky regions. I cant recall how many bottlings were released but as Diageo didnt own the Macallan distillery and they certainly didnt release a bottle of Macallan as part of the Flora & Fauna series. Do you have a bottle of Macallan with a Flora & Fauna Series label Question Confused

Also i am not sure if you are saying the Pittyvaich is part of the series or not but i only recall a Pittyvaich 12 year old in the F & F series but not a 26 year old. There was some cask strength releases in the F7F series also perhaps the Pittyvaich 26 was one of those, is it a cask strength bottling. Last year there was a Pittyvaich 20 year old which was one of Diageos Special Releases.

Perhaps someone here could supply you with a complete list of what was released in the series.

Hi Alistair and thanks for info.

The two bottles I am having trouble finding information on are not part of the Flora and Fauna series.

The MacAllan is matured in sherry wood and is too dark to see if there is a number of the inside of the label.

The Pittyvaich I have is not a Flora and Fauna - but would like one!!!!!!

Thanks

Kev

kev i think i got hold of the wrong end of the stick Embarassed

If it is a distillery bottling of Macallan you have then the 10 year old bottling doesnt have a year of distillation on it unlike the Macallan 18 year old. Somtimes you can roughly estimate the year it was bottled by the label and packaging it is in. If you take a look over at The Whisky Exchange you may find one similar to yours.

kev, the standard bottle size changed from 75cl to 70cl in the UK in 1992 so your bottle of Macallan 10 year old was bottled before that date, IMO it looks like a 1980s bottle but perhaps was bottled as early as the 1970s.

Kev, IMO the Pittyvaich 12 Year old Flora & Fauna wasnt a great whisky in fact i thought it was quite poor on the other hand the Pittyvaich 20 year old 2009 Special Release was very good indeed, of course considerably more expensive so you would expect it to be. Some info on it here www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/pittyvaich20yearold.htm

Kev
Is there any more info on the label on the Pittyvaich such as who the bottler is.

Hi and many thanks indeed for all your information.

There is no other information on the Pittyvaich though.

Am trying to buy some whisky books to help me out in the future.

Thanks again

Alastair, I am not sure if this list is complete but i think it is. There was 35 bottles released in the Flora & Fauna Series of which 9 of them were Cask Strength bottlings.

The first 43% bottlings in the series released came in a wooden presentation box, but these are very difficult to find now and are now worth the most money. For example The Whisky Exchange is charging £150 for a 1st Edition Clynelish 14 Year old Flora & Fauna in a wooden presentation box. I did intend collecting the F & Fseries at first, in fact I had most of them at one time or another but ended up drinking them.

I agree Fergie the Pittyvaich 12 Year old Flora & Fauna wasnt great. Anyway here is the list for those who may be interested:

Flora & Fauna Series
Aberfeldy
Auchroisk
Aultmore
Balmenach
Benrinnes
Bladnoch
Blair Athol
Royal Brackla
Coal Ila
Clynelish
Craigellachie
Dailuaine
Dufftown
Glendullan
Glen Elgin
Glenlossie
Glen Spey
Inchgower
Linkwood
Mannochmore
Mortlach
Pittyvaich
Rosebank
Teaninich
Speyburn
Strathmill

Cask Strength Flora & Fauna Bottlings
Aberfeldy Cask Strength 1980 17 Year Old
Aultmore Cask Strength 1983
Blair Athol Cask Strength 1981
Caol Ila Cask Strength 1981
Clynelish Cask Strength 1982
Dailuaine Cask Strength 1980
Linkwood Cask Strength 1983
Mortlach Cask Strength 1980
Rosebank Cask Strength 1981

Top Malt . I am also collecting the Flora and fauna bottlings and now have 17 of the the standard and 5 of the cask strength. If it is of any help I have bought most of mine off EBAY as they are cheaper than the online shops. Glenwhisky1 seems to be OK and has advised me that she will be listing all of the editions at some point or other. Good luck with the collection.
