Black dog deluxe (or 12) as I think its known now is pretty good and cheap. I think only available originally for the Indian market.

A blended or vatted malt is simply a mix of two or more single malts from different distilleries. Monkey Shoulder, for example, consists of single malts from Balvenie, Glenfiddich and Kininvie. I agree that the SWA's insistence that the term "blended malt" should be used rather than "vatted malt" confuses the issue of what is a blended Scotch, i.e. malt with other grain whiskies, as opposed to a Scotch that is vatted, i.e., consisting of a multitude of single malts.

Indeed.

Of course 90% of whisky purchases are blends (most likely scotch) and Joe public will obviously not be confused by the introduction of the term "blended" in regards to malts
........In fact, 90% of whisky buyers have no idea what blends, blended malts, age ststments or even scotch actually mean. In fact, moving to "blended" will have entirely the opposite effect and just confuses the hell out of most buyers.

The people who understand the difference also understood the difference when it was "vatted", so the change is completely pointless and another case of the SWA sticking it's oar in.

They could ban "additives" (read e150a).

That'll confuse the hell out of Joe Public......

....nah, that be bad for whisky sales, which is what the SWA really cares about. Cash baby.

Well . . . my first dram of 'Monkey Shoulder' . . . BLEND (says so on their bottle, must be so, or they wouldn't say so . . and must not be ashamed of it). In fact, I'm not ashamed to be drinking it . . . very drinkable indeed. Kind of a darker, richer, sweeter version of Old Pulteney 10 to me; but then, what do I know?
I know I like it. Glad it was talked about. Could see myself buying this occasionally.

Recently I tested my pal with a blind test , he' single malt drinker only not very experienced but I tested with two blends to see if he liked and he did they was jw black 12 and chivaz regal 12, I enjoyed also but it got me thinking about trying more blends so question is lad how does the JB rare compare to the jw and regal ????

I would rate jw black and chivas 12 above JB

Agreed. I'd put the CR12 in the same bracket as the JB rare, maybe just slightly ahead. JW Red would be in a lower bracket than those two, but JW Black way ahead.
