I should add that they had most of their whisky at 20% off.

My local M&S has the Glenfarclas 12 on clearance at £28, and their own label Highland single malt for £24. Now, that may not be a particularly great price for an undisclosed supermarket label malt, but the box says "crafted not far from the banks of the River Clyde", which to my powers of deduction means Glengoyne!

I have always thought it was Glengoyne and I believe Glengoyne owners, Ian Macleod, bottles a lot of stuff for M&S

That makes sense - I suppose the distillery nearest the river is Auchentoshan, but of course it's not a Highland, which can only leave Glengoyne. I'll probably try it - £24 is a really good price for a 12 year-old Glengoyne, and will be fun to compare with the official bottling.

That is why I wonder if the M&S 21 year old Speyside could possibly be from Ian Macleods Tamdhu distillery

Glengoyne 14 is back at my local M&S at £32 currently. It's a good deal in and of itself, although their own label Highland 12 year-old (almost certainly also a Glengoyne as discussed above) is still £24.

Having not experienced the Highland 12 I did notice it mentions wood smoke and a peaty tang on the . Are they typical of Glengoyne because I was under the impression they produced unpeated whisky?

Indeed, Glengoyne is unpeated - my guess that it's Glengoyne stems only from the fact that it's the only Highland distillery 'a short distance from the River Clyde', unless they stretch the definition of 'short' of course!

Is it just the M&S branches I've been too in the past month or have they reduced the range of whisky they stock in favour I think of fashionable gin.

My fears look founded having visited another couple of M&S stores. Even one in Scotland. M&S look to have been discounting some of those because they were discontinuing them and giving the shelf space to Gin.
