House of Hazelwood 18 Year Old Review

24th March 2016

Review of the new House of Hazelwood 18 Year Old premium Scotch blended whisky.

House of Hazelwood 18 Year Old ReviewHouse of Hazelwood 18 year old is the entry level whisky in William Grant's new premium Scotch blended whisky range.

William Grant describe the new brand as an elegant and vivacious new blended Scotch whisky which has been inspired by the Grant family luminary Janet Sheed Roberts (1901 to 2012) and expressed through the spirit of the great Art Deco cities that influenced the world in her heyday.

The House of Hazelwood 18 Year Old expression is inspired by the classic elegance of Paris in the 1920s. This release they say reveals an elegant and classic whisky, perhaps the purest expression of Kininvie and Girvan spirits in the range, and married in tuns of Portuguese oak. Presented in a 50cl bottle and bottled at 40% ABV,  the House of Hazelwood 18 Year Old has an RRP of 50.

The 18 Year Old is presented in packaging inspired by the Art Deco movement in Paris. The design focuses on the creation of a distinctive visual leitmotif associated with the luminosity of the city.

The House of Hazelwood whisky range was initially launched in Paris Duty Free at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport in February 2016, it will remain exclusively in travel retail until September 2016 when it will then launch in a few select markets around the world.

If you are not lucky enough to be jetting off anywhere in the next 6 months and passing through an airport which offers the new House of Hazelwood range then you will find a superb range of premium blended whiskies as well a huge range of single malt whiskies available from specialist Whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Lively enticing vanilla sweetness, gentle mature bourbony oak.

Taste: A soft silky smooth delivery with deliciously creamy vanilla toffee which dovetails with a lovely light Demerara sugar sweetness and coconut. Gentle mature oak is always in the background.

Finish: A little delicate oak spice lingers into the finish.

Comment: A delicious mature blend with a fantastic nose. I am guessing its component parts of Kininvie and Girvan spent most of there 18 years maturing in refill Bourbon casks before being married in the Portuguese oak tuns. A smooth, fresh, mature very easy to drink quality blend. Only a 50cl bottle but a quality blended whisky for its 50 price tag. You would be hard pushed to find a single malt of this age and quality for this price. One to watch for on your travels.

SMW Score Blended Whisky 90/100
