Broken corks

Hi. I'm after some advice please.

My father left me a number of bottles of Whisky, some with plastic topped corks. As the bottles had already been opened, I decided to sample the contents!

Unfortunately, as dad had stored them upright, I found that the corks had dried out and they broke from the plastic on opening.

Before I try and get them out carefully with a corkscrew, does anyone have any other suggestions?

Also, should I end up with cork in the amber nectar, am I best to just strain or filter it somehow?

Upright is the correct way to store whisky, as the strength of the alcohol would damage the cork especially older bottlings as corks were not the quality they are today.

Just try to get the remaining cork out the best way you can and filter the whisky to drink or rebottle in another bottle.

Take note that after a couple of years of being open a whisky can lose some of its character. Thus deterioration is faster the les that remains in the bottle.
