World Duty Free has revealed that Suntory's Yamazaki single malt whiskies at London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 have set a new record for duty free sales.
Japanese single malt whisky Yamazaki, showcased in a display area situated at a premium location, has become the best performing brand in terms of volume and revenue since T5 opened, the travel retailer said.
The promotional display featured the award-winning premium-priced 10yo, 12yo and 18yo Yamazaki single malts as well as the highly-prized Yamazaki 1979 whisky.
World Duty Free Buyer Paul Hunnisett said: "World Duty Free is delighted to partner with Suntory to develop the Yamazaki range in our shops. The display showcase at Heathrow Terminal 5 has been a phenomenal success, demonstrating our customers growing appreciation of quality niche brands and at the same time presenting the world exclusive Yamazaki 1979 single cask limited edition."
In recent years, Yamazaki 10yo, 12yo and 18yo single malts have won ten silver and gold medals and a trophy at the International Spirits Challenge, the International Wine and Spirits Challenge and the San Francisco World Spirits Challenge.
The Yamazaki range retails from £25.99 (US$37.80) for the 10yo to £79.99 (US$116.40) for the 18yo.
Yamazaki is becoming increasingly sought-after by whisky connoisseurs in Europe where it available through specialist spirits retailers.
Suntory Business Development Director Europe Tomo Akaike said: "Connoisseurs of single malt whisky are spreading the reputation of Yamazaki single malts by word of mouth. The tremendous sales response at Terminal 5 and its upmarket whisky aficionados shows a remarkable degree of recognition of outstanding taste and quality."
