Many, many private individuals who buy and immediately flip bottles list at auction with no reserve.
So, the only chance they have of making money is if secondary market buyers bid in excess of retail price.
Such buyers all have a choice - to bid high or not to bid high. There is, to the best of my knowledge no compulsion.
They could instead buy one of the tens of thousands of quality bottles of whisky available at very reasonable prices in the primary market. |

Dufftown Whisky Shop have put one bottle of the Port Ellen up on their website at £1,665. |

One on Nickolls & Perks for £1,599 at the mo. |
