Whisky Focus - Douglas Laing Yula 22 Year Old Chapter 3

Douglas Laing Yula 22 Year Old Chapter 3

27th September 2017
Douglas Laing Yula 22 Year Old Chapter 3, the final instalment in a 3 part Island blended malt whisky trilogy charting the whisky's journey over the past 2 years.

Yula 22 Year Old Chapter 3Glasgow based independent whisky bottler Douglas Laing has released the final whisky in its 3 part, "Yula" Island blended malt whisky trilogy. The 3rd and final whisky in the series is Yula 22 Year Old Chapter 3.

The Yula trilogy collection has uniquely charted the spiritís journey over the years - each bottling showing how time has influenced the story. The first edition, Yula 20 Year Old launched in October 2015 followed by the Yula 21 Year Old in September 2016 which was not quite as smoky and a little spicier and sweeter than the Yula 20.

Douglas Laing describe Yula 22 as a complex mix of sweet peat, pepper, coal dust, oak wood smoke with a late-on-the-palate chocolatey sweetness.

I know those of you who have tasted the first two outstanding instalments of this series wont want to miss this final part. I haven't yet had the chance to taste this final instalment but hopefully it matches the quality of the first two and it should be interesting to see what effect another year in the cask has had on the whisky.

The whisky takes its name from the eponymous ancient Islay legend of a beautiful but tragic Norse goddess, Yula, which is perhaps a big clue to where most of the contributing whiskies in the blended malt may originate from. Douglas Laing say that it is comprised of several of Scotlandís most sought after, peated malts.

Yula III is bottled at natural cask strength of 51.2%, which is not much less than Yula II at 52.3% and the first release of 52.6% so it doesn't appear that the angels have had much of a share each year and as we expect from Douglas Laing, Yula III has been bottled without colouring nor chill-filtration.

Yula 22 year old is a limited release of just 900 bottles worldwide and will be available from specialist Whisky retailers such as Master of Malt while stocks last.
