Whisky Focus - Yula 21 Year Old 2nd Release

Yula 21 Year Old Review (Yula II)

31st October 2016

Review of the Douglas Laing Yula 21 Year Old, the second limited edition release in a 3 part Island blended malt trilogy.

Yula 21 Year Old ReviewThe Yula 21 year old Island region blended malt whisky is the second release in the Yula trilogy created by the innovative folks at Glasgow based Douglas Laing.

Douglas Laing have proved to us a few times in the past that they have a knack for putting together some very good blended malts and they proved it again this time last year when they released the first bottling in this Yula trilogy which has now sold out in most marketplaces.

The Yula Island region blended malt trilogy charts the spirit’s journey within the cask, where the magic of maturation transpires and the various elements are finally united in their own marriage. Following last years 20 year old release, we now have the chance to see how Yula has developed one year on with Yula II 21 year old.

The whisky takes its name from the eponymous ancient Islay legend of a beautiful but tragic Norse goddess, Yula, which is perhaps a big clue to where most of the contributing whiskies in the blended malt may originate from. Douglas Laing say that it is comprised of several of Scotland’s most sought after, peated malts.

Yula II is bottled at natural cask strength of 52.3%, which is not much less than the first release of 52.6% so it doesn't appear that the angels have taken much over the past 12 months and as we expect from Douglas Laing it is bottled without colouring nor chill-filtration.

Yula 21 year old is a limited release of just 900 bottles worldwide and will be available from specialist Whisky retailers such as Master of Malt while stocks last.

Yula 21 Year Old Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Candied pear, a very gentle coastal breeze carrying a little pepper and a touch of smoke.

Taste:  A lovely mild candied smoke coated fruitiness leads the way, then the sweet oak spices, vanilla and mouth coating pepper lead the counter attack.

Finish: Long, the gentle candied sweetness fades first leaving the peppery mildly drying oak spices, a touch of liquorice and lingering gentle ashy smoke.

Comment: I do like to try and decipher what may have gone into a blended malt, is there perhaps some Talisker and Caol Ila here. Whatever is in it, Yula 21 has the same coastal feel to it which was in Yula 20. It is still a delicious smooth gentle smoky expression, perhaps not quite as smoky and a little spicier and sweeter than I recall Yula 20 being. Still a lovely, smooth, mature and well balanced Island malt.

SMW Score 89/100
