Highland Park 16 Year Old Wings Of The Eagle Review

20th September 2018
Review of the new Highland Park 16 Year Old Wings Of The Eagle travel retail exclusive whisky.

The Highland Park 16 Year Old Wings Of The Eagle sits at the heart of the new Highland Park travel retail exclusive range.

A combination of whiskies matured in both sherry seasoned European and American Oak casks, it has been bottled at 44.5% ABV with no added colouring. Wings Of The Eagle is described by the distillery as being a spicy and elegant whisky, with layers of flavour derived from the combination of casks which it spent 16 year maturing in.

Priced around 79 and presented in a 70cl bottle and packaging which has been inspired by the distillery's Orcadian roots and Viking ancestry, being named for the Eagle which held iconic status for the Vikings.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Mature, ripe, sherried fruit, cherry and apricot, vanilla toffee and little heather honey and the gentlest smoke lurking in the background.

Taste: Honey coated apricots, raisins, vanilla toffee, nutmeg, milk chocolate and some oak spice.

Finish: A medium to long finish with some apricot and peach, some lovely lingering peppery oak spice and marzipan, and some gentle Highland Park smoke.

Comment: The natural darker colour of the Wings Of The Eagle immediately lets you know that there is more sherry cask influence at play here than in the other expressions in the new Highland Park travel retail line up.

It has a fabulous nose and it is richer, fruitier and spicier than the two other new Highland Park travel retail animals (Bear & Wolf), its a pity they bottled it in a 70cl bottle as it is the best of the animal trio and if you can only pick it up in the airport they should really put it in a 1 litre bottle.

SMW Scotch Blended Whisky Score 85/100

Look out for the new  Highland Park Travel Retail exclusive collection next time you are passing through the airport but if you have no plans to travel in the near future you will find the current Highland Park domestic core range as well as some limited edition releases available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop and Master of Malt
