Glengoyne
adds a big sherried 25 year old to the
top of its core
range of whiskies
Following on from the the launch of a
new look
Glengoyne whisky range at the
end of 2012 the folks at Glengoyne have
once again been hard at it behind the
scenes and have announced the addition
of another expression to the range, the
Glengoyne 25 year old.
The
Glengoyne 25 year old has been matured
exclusively in hand-selected European
oak sherry casks for a quarter of a
century, this new addition comes in at
the top of the Glengoyne core range
which already includes the Glengoyne 10,
12, 15, 18, 21 year old and Cask
Strength malts.
As you can see from the picture of the
new 25 year old the whisky is a lovely
rich dark mahogany colour which will be
solely
testament to the 25 years it spent
slowly maturing in European oak sherry casks,
like the rest of the Glengoyne core
range it is bottled with no added
artificial colouring and you will be
pleased to hear that it is also non
chill-filtered and bottled at a very
respectable 48% ABV.
Can the new Glengoyne 25 year old match the outstanding sherry cask
matured Glengoyne 21 year old for
quality? And hopefully it isn't blighted
by the dreaded sulphur like some of the
Glengoyne core range can be, such as the
very disappointing and not cheap 18 year
old. I can tell you in my opinion it
more than matches up to the 21 year old
and I am happy to say that there are no
sulphur blemishes in this expression it
is of the highest quality, a big rich sherried
whisky and it is fitting that it now
sits at the top of the Glengoyne core
range.
The new 25 year old has a RRP of £250
which will be a stumbling block for
many, it is a big ask at around £155
MORE than the current price for the
superb Glengoyne 21 year old. Obviously
Glengoyne rate the 25 very highly and
having tasted it I can see why but sadly
they have priced many out of the market
with this price tag. All I can say is if
you enjoy a big sherried malt then you
will not be disappointed with this.
The 25 year old as you would expect
given its age is
presented in a new premium heavy bespoke
bottle and outer box. The bottle
features a fine metal stopper, crafted
cartouche and delicately branded neck
tag and is attractively displayed in an
oak box interior, which includes an
engraved plinth. The elegant exterior
has a refined feather pattern subtly
varnished on the pack.
Commenting on the new malt, Iain Weir,
Marketing Director for Ian Macleod
Distillers, said: "The Glengoyne 25YO is
an extremely special malt. Matured in
our traditional dunnage warehouses for
25 years in the finest European oak
sherry casks, unchill-filtered and
bottled as taste insists at 48% ABV, the
result is a flavour of soft oak,
cinnamon, stewed fruits and a Seville
marmalade tang. A perfect after dinner
dram."
Glengoyne is owned by one of Scotland’s
leading, independent, family-owned
distillers, Ian Macleod Distillers Ltd.
Unlike most other single malt whiskies,
Glengoyne dries its malted barley using
only warm air resulting in this
extremely subtle yet complex malt where
all the delicate flavours are freely
expressed.
Glengoyne Distillery - highly regarded
as Scotland’s most beautiful distillery
in Dumgoyne near Loch Lomond – runs its
stills slower than any other distillery,
supporting the claim that Glengoyne
genuinely is "Worth the Wait".
The Glengoyne 25 year old is now
available from
The Whisky Exchange priced £235.

Glengoyne 25 Year Old Review
|
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose: A lovely fresh clean
nose, a brown sugar sweetness, big
sherried fruitcake notes just urging me
on to have a taste.
Taste:
A silky smooth delivery of juicy dark
sherried fruit, burnt raisins, orange. A
light touch of sweet vanilla tablet
peaks through from behind the
deliciously rich dark fruit A
lovely touch of cinnamon and ginger.
Finish: Long lingering dark
sherried fruit that is juicy to the end
and a lovely slowly drying mild oak
spice.
Comment:
Big sherried drams are often described
as tasting like fruit cake but in this
case I would describe this as a luxury
fruit cake. This really is a top quality
big rich sherried whisky and it is
fitting that it now sits at the top of
the Glengoyne core range and hats off to
Glengoyne for bottling it at 48% ABV
which adds to the taste experience. The
price tag is a big ask at around £155
more than the superb Glengoyne 21 year
old but if you have deep pockets or are
looking for something very special to
spoil yourself then I guarantee this
won't disappoint if you like a big
sherried whisky. I think I now need to revisit the rest
of the Glengoyne core range.
