Review of Gordon & MacPhail Cask Strength Caol Ila 2005.
Gordon
& MacPhail Cask Strength Caol Ila 2005
was matured in First Fill Sherry Butts
#301521, #301523, #301524 & #301527 and
bottled on the 20th July 2016 at 57.3%
ABV.
As its name suggests this is from G &
M's Cask Strength range of whiskies.
Bottled at natural cask strength and
colour directly from oak casks without
chill filtering. The highly individual
label on each bottle indicates the cask
number and the bottling date, along with
the distillation year and strength.
Original distillery cask strength
bottlings of Caol Ila are rare these days so it is
great to see bottlings like this from G
& M to keep us peat heads happy.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Smoke coated vanilla spread on well
charred toast, the intensity varies with
each sniff.
Taste:
A delicious creamy vanilla smoke coated
delivery, soft candied fruity sugars
cling to the palate.
Finish:
Long, the creamy vanilla, candied fruit
and delicious smoke lingers for and age.
A little bitterness sneaking in at the
end.
Comment:
The nose tells you that there is
something powerful to come yet it is
smooth on the palate. Delicious Caol Ila
smoke with just a gentle sherry cask
influence, not quite the first fill
sherry cask influence I was expecting
but a quality dram all the same
