Tullamore Dew 12 Year Old Special Reserve

28th November 2011

Tullamore Dew Launches 12 Year Old Special Reserve

This is Tullamore Dew’s best selling premium variant worldwide. Some of you may have already come across this one on your travels as it is sometimes found in travel retail outlets throughout the world, although it has never been available in UK travel retail.

The good news is that Tullamore Dew 12 Year Old Special Reserve is being launched in the UK. This latest addition to the Tullamore range in the UK will provide a premium offering to complement the very popular original Tullamore Dew blend. Tullamore Dew 12 Year Old Special Reserve variant will be on shelves of whisky specialist  shops from late November.

So what makes the Tullamore Dew 12 Year Old Special Reserve special apart from the obvious - the 12 year old age statement, well it is a unique blend of three different types of triple distilled Irish whiskey:

  • Pot still whiskey, which is a unique Irish style of whiskey which is distilled from malted and unmalted barley in copper pot stills. There is a higher percentage pot still whiskey in the blend than what you will find in the standard Tullamore Dew blend.

  • Malt whiskey which is distilled from malted barley only, in copper pot stills. There is also a higher percentage of malt whiskey than what you will find in the standard Tullamore Dew blend.

  • Grain whiskey which is distilled from corn and malted barley in tall column stills.
The three types of Irish whiskey in the blend are all aged between 12-15 years in ex-bourbon and Olorosso Sherry casks which make the 12 Year Old Special reserve round, smooth yet satisfyingly complex.

This is the first release in the UK from Tullamore since it was acquired by William Grant & Sons in 2010 when they bought Tullamore and three liqueurs – Irish Mist, Carolans and Frangelico from the Irish C&C Group..

Most of the well known Irish whiskeys today are produced in just two distilleries and Tullamore is no different, most Tullamore whiskey has been produced at the Irish Distillers Midleton distillery in Cork since 1963 when the brand was sold to Powers and the Tullamore distillery was closed.

So are we likely to see a new Tullamore distillery in the near future? I certainly hope so, since William Grant & Sons acquired Tullamore it has been widely rumoured that they want to distil there own products and would be looking to build a distillery which would enable it to become a very significant player in Ireland but to date William Grant & Son has not commented on whether it will be building a new Tullamore distillery. My guess is we may see something happening sooner rather than later.

Tom Wade, Senior Brand Manager for Tullamore Dew at First Drinks, comments: "With Tullamore Dew, we really want to spread the unique Irish spirit of the brand. We have exciting plans to grow the brand in the UK as there is a real opportunity for Tullamore Dew to become a serious player in the whiskey market. With the recent announcement of the new marketing investment and now with the 12 Year Old liquid entering the UK market, we hope to really establish the brand across both the on and off-trade, particularly in the more premium sector and with the whiskey connoisseur.

"Premium brands are outperforming the spirits market across both channels and whiskey is a key beneficiary of this. With consumers increasingly looking at brands which offer real heritage, integrity and value, we are confident that Tullamore Dew will be well received by consumers."

This latest development comes just two months after the brand announced the roll-out of a multi-million dollar global investment in Tullamore Dew, with the reveal of new look packaging and the launch of a global integrated communications campaign, under the banner of ‘Irish True’.

Tullamore Dew 12 Year Old will be available in specialist whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange. It has a RRP of £29.45 per 70cl bottle.

Finish: Rich, long, malty and spicy notes. Pleasantly dry finish with slightly lemony and sweet notes lingering

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Lovely elegant aroma of vanilla, sweet coconut and tea biscuits, with a lovely gentle spicy and fruity aroma in the background.

Palate: Loads of pot still character, smooth, oily. A great balance of soft sherried fruit and spices, coconut, creamy, toasted vanilla and a touch of dry oak.

Finish: A long lingering finish. Slowly drying oak, nutty, spicy a touch of sweet vanilla.

Comment: 2011 has definitely turned into a great year for premium Irish whiskey in the UK with this yet another quality Irish whiskey being launched.

It takes a few mouthfuls to fully appreciate but once you get into this with its big pot still influence and wonderful delicate sherry and spices, you will just want to pour yourself another. The balance of fruit, spice and oak is perfect. Definitely a premium blend and a big step up from the standard Tullamore. If you enjoy premium Jameson whiskey or Redbreast whiskey then you will definitely enjoy this one and if you haven't tried Irish whiskey yet for the price this would be a great place to start. Slainte, William.
