Review of
the new Tobermory signature single
malt, the Tobermory 12 Year Old.
I
recently had the pleasure of attending
the launch of the new Tobermory 12 Year
Old single malt whisky from the from the
Isle of Mull located distillery. The new 12 year
old will replace the now discontinued 10
year old as the signature expression of
the Tobermory distillery.
The Tobermory 12 Year Old
will also mark the forthcoming return to
production of the distillery in July
this year after a two year shut down in
production for maintenance and a major
refurbishment of the distillery.
By the time the distillery reopens to full capacity
in the summer they will have new wash
backs, new stills and a new still
room, the work is set to continue for
the next 5 years this will involve a new
visitor space, improvements in
production efficiency and the
development of further distillation
capabilities.
Regards replacing their 10 year old
signature malt with the new Tobermory 12
year old signature malt, Tobermory
recognised that although they had made
quite an improvement to their 10 year
old in recent years it was concluded
that their spirit had not reached its
full potential, so with some skill from
the Tobermory master blenders and a
further 2 years maturation we now have a
new Tobermory signature single malt, the Tobermory
12 Year Old.
The majority of Tobermory 12 Year Old
was ex-Bourbon cask matured with just a
small proportion of the whisky finished
in virgin American oak casks. Bottled at
46.3% ABV, it is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured just as all
whiskies should be.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes::
Nose:
A lovely gentle and enticingly sweet
nose with orange citrus and some candied
pear, vanilla, some distant ginger and
floral notes.
Taste:
Smooth with a delicious mild barley
sugared sweetness, vanilla infused with
orange and a lovely gentle oak spice
coats the palate.
Finish:
Vanilla toffee, the lovely orange citrus
is still hanging in there, becomes a
little spicier before bowing out
Comment:
A very easy drinking, enjoyable sweet
malty, vanilla'd whisky with a lovely orange
note throughout and a nice bit of added
spice from the portion of virgin oak
in the mix. I would say the extra 2
years and use of the virgin oak has
certainly turned the quality of this now
signature malt from Tobermory up a notch.
SMW Score
84/100
