Whisky Focus - Douglas Laing Timorous Beastie Review

Douglas Laing Timorous Beastie Review

15th September 2014
Douglas Laing add "Timorous Beastie" to their regional blend malt whisky range.

The team at Douglas Laing in Glasgow have once again been hard at it trying to keep us malt whisky drinkers entertained, this time they have come up with a new Highland Blended Malt (AKA Vatted Malt) which they have named Timorous Beastie.

Douglas Laing tell me that Timorous Beastie is a Small Batch bottling created using only the finest Highland Malts including – amongst others – Dalmore, Glengoyne and Glen Garioch.

Timorous Beastie is bottled at 46.8% ABV, Douglas Laing describe it as having a charming sweet, heather honey and Highland character. The new whisky joins Douglas Laing's peaty Islay blended malt "Big Peat" and the richly spiced, vanilla'd fruity "Scallywag" Speyside blended malt which was launched late last year. All three whiskies in what has now become Douglas Laing's small batch regional blended malt range are as you would expect from DL, naturally coloured and not chill-filtered.

Those of you familiar with the work of Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns will recognise Timorous Beastie as the mouse Burns immortalised in his poem "To a Mouse". The mouse Burns referred to was a timid, little field mouse and after tasting Timorous Beastie I would say the creative bunch at Douglas Laing have named this easy drinking Timid wee Beastie of Highland Blended Malt whisky well.

As with the other bottlings in Douglas Laing's regional blended malt range the team at DL have made a great job of the bottle and tube. Timorous Beastie has a RRP of £34.99 and will be available from whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange from this month.

I wonder if we will see a Island blended malt added to the Douglas Laing regional malt range in the future?

Douglas Laing Timorous Beastie Tasting Notes

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Barley sugar sweetness drizzled with lemon with some mild honey and pear hiding behind it and just the slightest touch of oak spice.

Taste:  A light bodied malt with a silky smooth delivery of fruit leading the way, some lovely sweet candied orange and lemon closely followed by mild honey, some vanilla fudge and oak spices.

Finish: Medium length slightly dryish finish with a light honeyed sweetness and a little spice and zesty lemon hanging around.

Comment: A very easy to drink Highlander and it is just as you would expect from a Highland region malt whisky, light bodied with a bit of fruit, honey, spicy character and with a dryish finish. It dropped a few points with a bit of a short finish but that's easily solved just take another mouthful (in moderation of course). It has no age statement but I would guess there has been some skilful vatting of young and old here to give us the best of both ages.

SMW Score 83/100
