The World’s
Best Whiskies - 750 Essential Drams from
Tain to Tokyo by Dominic Roskrow
This
is is not another pocket sized whisky
guide as many whisky books tend to
be now. This is a 27 X 21cm very well
illustrated comprehensive guide to
whisky. But does bigger mean better?
The introduction gives you a brief
history of whisky and an overview of the
of the making of whisky, including the
production of single malt whisky,
blended whisky and bourbon. This is
followed by some whisky basics on
tasting whisky, flavour categories and
what type of whisky glass to use. It
covers the different whisky styles found
in the world today and there is a
section on whisky & food pairing
and cocktails.
We then get to the section that gives
the book its title, the section with 750
of the worlds best whiskies. This is
split in to sub-sections - Scotland, USA,
Canada, Ireland, Japan, Europe and the
Rest Of The World.
Each of the 750 whiskies is accompanied
with an image of each bottle and a
straight forward unpretentious
informative traditional tasting note for
each of the whiskies.
My one criticism of the book is that
Dominic has used a symbol system to help
describe each of the 750 whiskies, 10
symbols in total. My problem with this
symbol system is each time I came back
to the book I couldn't remember what
each symbol meant and repeatedly had to
hunt for the symbols definition page,
why is it on page 45 and not the first
or last page or even on the inside
jacket of the book. I suppose you would
eventually get to know the symbols which
are of interest to you such as PREMIUM
TIPPLE or CONNOISSEUR CLASSIC.
Throughout the book between the whisky
tasting notes there are profiles of some of
the top distillers in the whisky
industry as well as profiles of some of
the top distilleries in the world and
some great anecdotes about the places
that produce the whiskies
A smart well illustrated and very
readable whisky book
covering most of the whiskies we are
likely to encounter. The straight
forward unpretentious tasting notes and
whisky anecdotes make this a comprehensive
and entertaining
guide for both the whisky connoisseur and
those just beginning their journey into
the world of whisky.
To answer my question "does bigger mean
better?", yes.
